Where to drink
A palace-view lounge, a forest-side wine bar and a fireside inn.
Natural-leaning wines from small growers and local craft beers with generous sharing boards, and a 30-seat terrace looking onto the forest; blind tests and board games on some nights.
Built 1669–1674, 30 metres wide and more than 60 metres above the Seine, the terrace uses false perspective to look shorter than it is – the best free view of western Paris.
Past the Belvédère, the demi-lune, the Rond-Royal, with views to the Château du Val or across the Seine to Maisons-Laffitte
Domain hours: October 08:00–18:00, November–February 08:00–17:00. Closed in weather alerts.
Wide, flat and car-free; the domain is open every day.
Start: Petite Terrasse, beside the Pavillon Henri IV, rue Thiers
A day-long loop through the royal forest with an unusual thread: tiny statues of saints watching from the trees.
Past seven oratories and four crosses in niches high in the trees, the Maison d'Éducation de la Légion d'Honneur, the Fête des Loges ground and the Camp des Loges
All year. Two oratories were recently restored (Sainte Geneviève, July 2024; Notre-Dame de France, January 2025).
For keen walkers; take care crossing the forest roads (tourist office).
Start: Join the loop in the forest: the tourist office's forest itinerary meets it after the Mare aux Canes, at the Étoile d'Actéon
