A Greek trading post, a Roman town, then for centuries France's frontier facing Nice across the Var: Antibes has kept watch over this shore for more than two thousand years. The Fort Carré still holds its headland, Vauban's harbour still shelters the boats, and the sea wall under the Promenade Amiral-de-Grasse is the one stretch of the ramparts left standing.

The Riviera came later. Villas spread over the Cap d'Antibes from the middle of the nineteenth century, Juan-les-Pins was laid out as a resort in 1882 and found its rhythm in the 1920s, Picasso painted in the Château Grimaldi in the autumn of 1946, and Jazz à Juan has filled the Pinède Gould every July since 1960.

Today it is the second town of the Alpes-Maritimes after Nice – 77,637 people, two postcodes and about 25 kilometres of coast. This guide takes in all of it, with VERA PI: eleven quartiers, every shop, table, beach and sight, and what is open right now.
