At the quiet edge of San Cassiano, beneath the peaks of Lavarela and Conturines, Aman Rosa Alpina occupies ground the Pizzinini family has shaped since 1939, when they first took over a modest inn opposite the village church. For three generations the hotel grew into one of the Dolomites' most loved independent addresses, anchored for years by the three-MICHELIN-starred St Hubertus. In 2023 owner Hugo Pizzinini took the boldest decision of the hotel's history: he closed it, demolished it entirely, and rebuilt it with Aman in a two-year, €60 million reinvention designed by architect Jean-Michel Gathy, reopening on 24 July 2025. The MICHELIN Guide now awards it Two MICHELIN Keys, describing an exceptional stay in an update of a 1930s mountain lodge that was already one of the region's best-loved hotels. St Hubertus did not return; in its place, a new, more relaxed culinary identity has taken shape across four dining venues.

Aman Rosa Alpina stands at the edge of San Cassiano, rebuilt from the ground up by the Pizzinini family and Aman, reopening in July 2025.

01The house

The story begins modestly: the Pizzinini family has been part of San Cassiano's identity since 1939, when they first took over a small inn opposite the village church, and the hotel's second founding act came in 1959, when Hugo Pizzinini's father demolished that original building to build something bolder, a decision locals thought mad at the time. His son repeated the gesture in 2023, razing the hotel completely rather than simply renovating it, and partnering with Aman on a rebuild that ran to roughly €60 million and two years of work.

The result, finished in July 2025, is the work of architect Jean-Michel Gathy, who is responsible for marrying Alpine lodge styling with tasteful, modernist-inspired Aman luxury: the exterior keeps a respectful chalet character while the interiors have been entirely transformed, with natural wood and stone keeping rooms and suites connected to the landscape. One visiting architect noted that the rebuild had not skimped on materials, using the best possible wood and stone with real aesthetic precision throughout.

02Rooms and suites

Aman Rosa Alpina counts 51 rooms and suites in total, combining state-of-the-art technology with Aman's design language in spaces inspired by the raw beauty of their mountain surrounds, built using natural materials such as wood and stone. Superior Suites range from 57 to 79 square metres, with separate bedroom and living areas and large windows framing the village below, while the 100-square-metre Dolomites Suite adds a private sauna, living area, office, bar and its own lift access.

Insider tip

Seasonal hotel: closes mid-October, reopens early December for winter; 1,537 metres above sea level.

At the top sit the Rosa Alpina Suites, 116 to 136 square metres with a private balcony, an open-plan living space with a dining table for six, a working fireplace and a spa-style bathroom with soaking tub and double vanity, framing either forest or San Cassiano church views through floor-to-ceiling glass. The one-of-a-kind, 145-square-metre Zeno Suite goes further still, with its own garden and private cinema.

03Where to eat

Dining is now spread across four venues curated by executive chef Gianluca Salvato, built around local ingredients that reflect the cultural heritage of the Dolomites. The Grill has become the village-facing heart of the house, serving a relaxed pan-Italian menu executed with precision — saucy veal meatballs, crisp cotoletta alla Milanese, al dente spaghetti bottarga and pink Piemonte rib-eye — alongside handmade pastas and pizzas cooked live and shared family-style.

This winter the resort adds Enju, a Japanese shabu-shabu restaurant that its owners describe as the first of its kind in Europe, built around premium meats and a broth infused with some twenty-one ingredients. The old St Hubertus, one of only eleven three-MICHELIN-starred restaurants in Italy and long associated with chef Norbert Niederkofler's 'Cook the Mountain' philosophy, was deliberately not brought back for the reopening.

04The bar

Il Salotto is the all-day fulcrum of the house, blending alpine charm with Aman's particular stillness: coffee and light bites by day, cocktails by night, served from early morning until midnight. Beside it, the Cigar Lounge offers an intimate retreat of aged spirits and premium cigars behind floor-to-ceiling windows looking into the forest, with tasting routes built around whisky or Americas rum for those who want the ritual guided.

05Spa and wellbeing

The Aman Spa spans 1,684 square metres over two levels, built around signature therapies and genuinely serious wellness infrastructure: seven treatment suites, a 20-metre heated outdoor infinity pool with jacuzzi, and indoor and family pools, all set against hydrotherapy facilities including a Finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam bath and cold-plunge pool in an adults-only area for guests aged sixteen and over. A 210-square-metre fitness centre with TechnoGym equipment, a yoga studio and a mountain-view padel court round out the offer, and Maria Sharapova serves as Aman's global wellness ambassador, exploring the Dolomites this winter as part of the brand's wider wellness programme.

06The neighbourhood

San Cassiano sits at 1,537 metres in the Alta Badia valley, inside the UNESCO-listed Dolomites, and the hotel is positioned just 300 metres from the Piz Sorega ski lift, with an all-day shuttle running guests to and from the slopes. In winter that means direct access to the 1,200 kilometres of pistes that make up the Dolomiti Superski area, one of the largest linked ski regions in the Alps; in the warmer months the same trails open up for hiking and cycling, with guided excursions departing straight from the hotel.

07Making the most of a stay

Aman Rosa Alpina is most easily reached by car — about two and a half hours from Venice, an hour and a half from Bolzano and two hours from Innsbruck — though helicopter transfers can also be arranged, taking around forty-five minutes from Venice. Note that the hotel operates seasonally: in October 2026 it published dates showing it will close for the summer season on 18 October 2026 and reopen for winter on 4 December 2026, so stays need to be timed around the Alpine calendar rather than booked as a year-round fixture.
