Bardessono occupies five quiet acres at the centre of Yountville, on land where, in 1926, Italian immigrants John and Lucy Bardessono, together with John's brother-in-law Martin Zucco, purchased twenty acres to create a private estate and vineyard. The hotel that stands there today opened in 2009, a 62-key boutique hotel and spa designed by WATG's Architecture + Design Consultancy studio, built low around courtyards and ponds rather than behind one grand façade. It was one of only two hotels in the United States to achieve LEED Platinum certification at the time of its opening, drawing on rooftop solar and geothermal wells sunk deep into the valley floor. Today the MICHELIN Guide has awarded Bardessono Two Michelin Keys, part of a small number of American hotels recognised for design and character beyond mere accommodation. With 62 suites, three private villas, the b Spa and Lucy Restaurant & Bar, it remains Napa Valley's most considered argument for understated luxury.

Two MICHELIN Keys

A 2009-built, 62-suite hotel on the site of the 1926 Bardessono family farmstead, with Two MICHELIN Keys, b Spa and Lucy Restaurant & Bar.

01The house

The Bardessono family farmstead gave the hotel both its name and its ethos. The property, established in 1926, was originally the home of Italian immigrants John and Lucy Bardessono, who, together with John's brother-in-law, Martin Zucco, purchased the 20-acre land to create a private estate and vineyard. Today, the hotel occupies five acres of the land, and Lucy's Garden, tended to by Lucy, still thrives on the property, providing fresh produce for Lucy Restaurant & Bar.

When WATG's Architecture + Design Consultancy studio built the hotel that stands here today, sustainability was treated as an architectural brief rather than an afterthought. Bardessono was one of only two hotels in the United States to achieve LEED Platinum certification at the time of its opening, with a design that delivers 50% energy savings through 190kW of rooftop solar panels and 72 geothermal wells. Those geothermal wells run 300 feet deep to heat and cool the guestrooms and provide hot water, while 940 solar panels on the flat roofs, hidden behind parapets, produce 200 kW of power alongside rammed-earth sculptural walls and the estate's own 100-year-old olive trees. Bardessono has since added a Four-Star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, in 2022, to its list of honours.

02Rooms and suites

All of the hotel's 62 serene rooms are designed for in-room spa services, making Bardessono Napa's first and only all-suite hotel with in-room spa services. There are five layouts, each with generous outdoor space, sumptuous linens, gas fireplaces, and motion-controlled exterior shutters that manage the valley's strong daylight without a single curtain pulled by hand.

Insider tip

Centre of Yountville; walk to wineries, Cliff Lede Vineyards and the Napa Valley Heritage Museum; complimentary bikes.

For larger parties, the Maple Grove Villas offer an enhanced sense of privacy with secluded private courtyards, each with its own plunge pool. The three villas, the Jasper, the Flint and the Quartole, run from roughly 1,120 to 1,410 square feet and can be booked separately or combined into a single three-bedroom compound, each with its own gas fireplace, wet bar, dining table and heated outdoor plunge pool.

03Where to eat

Lucy's Garden, tended to by Lucy, still thrives on the property, providing fresh produce for Lucy Restaurant & Bar, the hotel's dining room and bar. On-site Lucy Restaurant & Bar celebrates Napa Valley's field-to-fork cuisine, with many ingredients travelling only a few steps from bed to kitchen before reaching the table.

04Spa and wellbeing

The b Spa carries the same philosophy indoors: treatments draw on ingredients from the hotel's own certified-organic garden, and every suite is built to double as a private spa, with a spa butler arriving ahead of time to prepare the room. Named among Vogue's Top 100 Spas in the World in its 2026 Global Spa Guide, the menu runs from an eighty-minute Hinoki-scented lymphatic release to facials built on marine-derived micro-spicules and traditional Korean Ji-ap massage technique.

Guests can also use the heated rooftop pool, hot tub and infrared sauna, open daily from nine in the morning to six at night; non-hotel guests booking a treatment of fifty minutes or longer can usually use the same pool deck on weekdays.

05The neighbourhood

Bardessono sits at the centre of Yountville, ensuring fast access to Finesse, the Store, which is merely six minutes' walk away, and Gallery 1870, just 450 metres from the hotel. The hotel is 1.5 kilometres from the Napa Valley Heritage Museum and around ten minutes' drive from the Cliff Lede Vineyards. Guests can also explore further on carbon-fibre bicycles available for rides through the neighbouring vineyards, with Yount Mill Road a favourite route between vineyards and pasture. Inside, the corridors double as a small private gallery through the hotel's partnership with San Francisco's Andrea Schwartz Gallery, its sculpture and paintings rotated periodically through the public spaces.

06Making the most of a stay

Every suite includes the use of hotel bicycles, so guests may spend days touring Yountville and Napa Valley rather than reaching for a car. The hotel is pet-friendly and 100% smoke-free, and a Lexus partnership puts hybrid and electric models on hand for local transfers around the valley.
