Bernardus Lodge & Spa spreads across 28 acres of vineyard, orchard and garden in Carmel Valley, a sun-warmed pocket of the Santa Lucia foothills some twenty minutes inland from the fog and cypress of Carmel-by-the-Sea. It opened in August 1999 as a romantic retreat for couples seeking a relaxing getaway in one of California's finest wine growing regions, the work of Bernardus "Ben" Pon, a Dutch winemaker, former Olympian and motor-racing driver who shaped a resort resembling a classic European country inn around his own vineyard and winery. The lodge has since changed hands, but the European ease and the wine-country rhythm he set down remain its signature: slow mornings, afternoon yoga, evenings by the fire. The MICHELIN Guide now awards the property Two MICHELIN Keys, and its restaurant, Lucia Restaurant & Bar, carries a MICHELIN Plate for cooking built on the estate's own gardens, orchards and hives.

MICHELIN Guide
Two MICHELIN Keys

Opened in 1999 by Dutch vintner Ben Pon, now Two MICHELIN Keys with a MICHELIN Plate restaurant, Lucia.

01The house

Ben Pon founded Bernardus Winery in Carmel Valley in 1989, and a decade later extended his wine ambitions into hospitality, opening a 57-suite lodge built in the spirit of a European country inn, complete with its own spa and signature restaurant. The lodge grew to its present 73 rooms, suites and villas as it matured through the 2000s and 2010s.

Ownership changed in 2014, when Pon sold the property to Ensemble Hotel Partners, who closed it for four months and poured a multimillion-dollar facelift into the public rooms before reopening in April 2015. That renovation folded two existing restaurants, Wickets Bistro and the tasting-menu room Marinus, into a single new destination: Lucia, named for the Santa Lucia range that shadows the valley. Though Bernardus Lodge is no longer under the same ownership as Bernardus Winery, the two have kept a close working relationship, with the winery's bottles still poured throughout the resort and in Lucia's cellar.

02Rooms and suites

The 73 guest rooms, suites and villas are arranged around croquet and bocce lawns, a vineyard and a rose garden, each room conceived as a private retreat with a two-person soaking tub, a wood-burning or gas fireplace, featherbeds and Italian linens. The style leans toward reinterpreted European elegance rather than rustic ranch-house cliché, with plush robes and an in-room dining table for a quiet supper beside the fire.

Insider tip

Resort fee applies; dog-friendly; Mercedes-Benz drive programme for US-licensed guests.

The villas go further still: bathrooms built around freestanding hammered-copper soaking tubs, hand-carved porcelain basins, al fresco showers set on hand-made Moroccan mosaic tile and radiant-heat floors, the kind of detail that has made the Lodge a favourite for honeymoons and anniversaries rather than a stop on a business itinerary.

03Where to eat

Lucia Restaurant & Bar occupies the heart of the lodge, a contemporary room built around a stone fireplace with a heated terrace looking toward the Santa Lucia Mountains. It holds a MICHELIN Plate, cooking that draws on the resort's own apiary and chef's garden alongside produce from Monterey County growers, under current executive chef Gus Trejo, whose seasonal menus work alongside a wine programme curated by Master Sommelier Roland Micu together with Bernardus Winery itself. The restaurant was shaped by founding chef Cal Stamenov, who ran the kitchen for over a decade and built its reputation on subtle, garden-grown cooking before later chefs, including Christian Ojeda, carried the torch forward.

The cellar beneath the dining room holds roughly a thousand wine labels and some five thousand bottles, and can be booked for private dinners of up to twelve guests over four, five or six courses. For something more theatrical, Lucia's Chef's Table seats up to five guests inside the working kitchen on Friday and Saturday nights, watching each course come together before it reaches the table.

04The bar and the wine room

Just off the lobby, Cooper's Den is Bernardus's informal answer to a hotel bar: a communal wine table built for friends and strangers alike to linger over a glass and conversation rather than a quiet nightcap at a counter. For larger private gatherings, the Magnum Room seats up to fourteen around a seven-foot round table, built for a Chef's tasting menu matched to the season's organic produce and naturally raised meats – one more reminder that wine, not cocktails, is the house language here.

05Spa and wellbeing

The Spa at Bernardus runs to roughly 5,200 square feet and has long been one of the property's star attractions alongside the restaurant, with an indoor-outdoor layout built around a body-temperature soaking pool and treatments infused with wine grapes and lavender grown on the estate itself. The resort fee folds in access to the warming pool, eucalyptus steam room and dry sauna, alongside a 24-hour fitness room, yoga classes and the lodge's two tennis courts.

Outdoors, guests have a heated swimming pool and hot tub plus an adult-only hilltop infinity jacuzzi looking out over the vines, croquet and bocce lawns threaded between the gardens, and a weekly schedule of live music and monthly culinary events that keep the pace unhurried rather than programmed.

06The neighbourhood

Carmel Valley's village, a short drive from the lodge, has become the centre of wine tasting in Monterey County, with around twenty tasting rooms clustered beneath old oaks alongside restaurants and shops. Bernardus Lodge sits roughly twenty minutes from Monterey Regional Airport and about ninety minutes from San Jose International, with Highway One, Pebble Beach golf and the Carmel River within easy reach for a day trip before returning inland to the valley's warmer, quieter light.

07Making the most of a stay

Rates carry a nightly resort fee that bundles a glass of wine at check-in, an in-room wine bar and butler's pantry stocked with Bernardus wine, beer and snacks, a Nespresso machine, spa-facility access, unlimited Wi-Fi and complimentary EV charging. One of the more unusual perks is the Mercedes-Benz drive programme, offering guests with a US licence complimentary use of one of four house cars for up to four hours. The lodge is pet-friendly for a one-time fee per dog, and belongs to the Preferred Hotels & Resorts Legend collection, with its iPrefer loyalty programme open to members at booking.
