In the wooded hills of Lenox, Canyon Ranch occupies Bellefontaine, a mansion raised for the financier Giraud Foster between 1896 and 1898 in pale brick and white marble, its façade by the New York firm Carrère and Hastings modelled on Ange-Jacques Gabriel's Petit Trianon at Versailles. Today the house anchors one of the country's most serious destination spas: 126 rooms built around a 100,000-square-foot health campus, where meals arrive without alcohol and the day is organised by a Wellness Guide rather than a concierge. The MICHELIN Guide awards Canyon Ranch Lenox Two Keys, judging it an exceptional stay, and notes that most guests arrive from New York and Boston for its full range of health, fitness, medical, mental and spiritual services. It is a resort built for commitment rather than passive pleasure-seeking, which is precisely why it has endured since the Zuckerman family first restored the ruined mansion more than three decades ago.

Two MICHELIN Keys

Bellefontaine, an 1890s mansion modelled on the Petit Trianon, now holds a 126-room wellness resort with Two MICHELIN Keys.

01The house

Bellefontaine was built as a summer “cottage” for Giraud and Jean Foster, a 35-room estate completed in the late 1890s that became, in the words of local historians, one of the defining mansions of Lenox's Gilded Age. Foster lived there until his death at 94; two years later, in 1947, the estate was sold to the Fathers of Mercy and became a seminary. In 1949 a fire gutted the interior — only the library survived untouched — and the house was rebuilt to continue as the Immaculate Heart of Mary boarding school until it closed in 1979 and stood empty for eight years.

Canyon Ranch co-founders Mel and Enid Zuckerman, together with Jerry Cohen, bought the derelict mansion in 1987 and spent roughly $40 million restoring it before reopening on 1 October 1989, the mansion returned to its original grandeur with new, New England-style buildings added around it in keeping with the setting. The result is a low half-circle of inn, spa and mansion arranged around a reflecting pool and formal gardens, every indoor space joined by glass-enclosed, climate-controlled walkways so that a Berkshires blizzard need never interrupt the day's programme.

02Rooms and suites

Canyon Ranch Lenox counts 126 rooms across four categories. Deluxe and Premium Deluxe rooms, each around 364 square feet with a king or two queens, sit close to the mansion and resort dining. Executive rooms, at 450 square feet, occupy the central position between spa and hotel, with a larger desk and seating area. The Luxury Suites, 800 square feet and sleeping three to four, add a separate living room, two bathrooms and a washer-dryer — useful for longer stays, since the resort's own packages run to five or seven nights. Every category connects to the rest of the campus through the mansion's glass-enclosed corridors, so a robe-clad walk from room to spa or dining room stays dry and warm whatever the season.

Insider tip

No alcohol served; book ahead and plan to stay several nights for the full programme.

03Where to eat

There is no wine list here: the MICHELIN Guide notes plainly that no alcohol is offered, and that meals are designed to be healthy yet genuinely good to eat. Silverleaf, open daily from 7 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., serves regional dishes built on wholesome, minimally processed ingredients, with vegan and gluten-free options throughout. The more casual Culinary Rebel, open 6.30 a.m. to 8 p.m., offers a quicker, Mediterranean-inflected menu with views over the Great Lawn — useful between a workout and an afternoon treatment. The kitchens are led by Executive Chef Scott Franqueza and Pastry Chef April Franqueza, whose backgrounds include a James Beard Award nomination for April's pastry work, brought here to make restraint taste like flavour rather than deprivation.

04Spa and wellbeing

The spa is the point of the place. The MICHELIN Guide describes a comprehensive experience spanning health, fitness, medical, mental and spiritual services, delivered by highly qualified professionals, and recommends booking well ahead since guests work with an advisor to choose a focus — a health intervention, say, or a full lifestyle reset — before building a schedule of activities that might include yoga, hiking or tennis. The resort's own menu now runs past 150 services across five pillars: massage and Ayurvedic treatments such as shirodhara and abhyanga sit alongside Eastern therapies including Thai massage and reiki, facials from Hydrafacial to Biologique Recherche, and The Beauty Sandwich®, a facial technique by the celebrity facialist Iván Pol. Add indoor and outdoor pools, a cold-plunge pool, and more than thirty daily optional classes, and the campus earns its MICHELIN recognition as New England's leading spa resort — a title the Guide gave it for 2026.

05The neighbourhood

Lenox has drawn cultural pilgrims since the Gilded Age, and two of its landmarks sit a short drive from Canyon Ranch's gates. Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, fills the valley with open-air concerts through the warmer months. The Mount, the 1902 house Edith Wharton designed with Ogden Codman Jr. and Francis Hoppin and later declared a National Historic Landmark, offers a second, very different Gilded Age interior to compare with Bellefontaine's restored halls — one built by a novelist for herself, the other by a financier for his guests.

06Making the most of a stay

Stays are typically structured around the resort's inclusive packages — three, five or seven nights — with chef-crafted dining, spa amenities, more than thirty daily activities, swimming and round-trip transportation bundled into the rate rather than itemised. Ask the Wellness Guide team early for a slot with the Culinary Rebel's Great Lawn-facing tables in good weather, and for the Ayurvedic treatments, which book out fastest. Winter visitors should not be put off by Berkshires snow: the glass-enclosed walkways mean every indoor facility, from pool to seminar room, is reachable without a coat.
