Under the northern tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, on land the US Army held for over a century, Cavallo Point occupies a former military post folded inside a national park. Fort Baker is a scenic army post in the Marin Headlands that helped defend the San Francisco area for over a century, and in 2008 it opened to guests as the result of a unique private, public and nonprofit alliance to restore, enhance and preserve the site. Cavallo Point offers 142 accommodations, split between Historic Lodging and Contemporary Lodging, and is the nearest hotel to the Golden Gate Bridge offering its iconic views. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Two MICHELIN Keys. Sausalito begins up the road, San Francisco is fifteen minutes across the bridge, yet from the Lodge's porches the city feels a hundred miles off — only fog, eucalyptus and the flat water of the bay.

142 rooms across restored 1901–1915 officers' quarters and new hillside suites, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge.

01The house

In 1866, the U.S. Army acquired the site for a military base to fortify the north side of the Golden Gate. Between 1901 and 1915, the Army built 24 Colonial Revival-style buildings around the parade ground, including barracks, officers' quarters, the commanding officer's residence, post headquarters, a hospital, a fully equipped gymnasium and an exchange. During the Second World War, Fort Baker produced mines to defend the coastline, soldiers laying them underwater and wiring them to shore for remote detonation that, in the end, was never required. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s, the fort officially transferred from post to park in 2002.

Symmetrical Colonial Revival-style buildings feature classical elements like columns and wraparound porches. General manager Martin Nicholson has described how the old rank structure still shapes the floor plan: "The larger residences were officers' quarters and family housing. The rooms behind them were for non‑commissioned officers and their families. And then the enlisted men stayed in the barracks." The restoration earned the project a LEED Gold designation from the U.S. Green Building Council, and the resulting 142-room lodge, healing arts centre and spa are spread across the cluster of Colonial buildings.

02Rooms and suites

Cavallo Point offers 142 accommodations divided between Historic Lodging and Contemporary Lodging: 68 rooms and suites built between 1901 and 1915 that once served as officers' quarters, and 74 newly constructed rooms and suites set on the hillside above the fort. Original brick fireplaces and beamed ceilings mingle with modern finishes and furnishings, such as butter-soft leather sofas and whitewashed Adirondack chairs.

Insider tip

Closest hotel to the Golden Gate Bridge; reached by shuttle or a short drive from San Francisco.

Within Historic Lodging, the website lists the 430-square-foot Historic City View Junior Suite with a king bed and sleeper sofa, the 540-square-foot Historic King Suite with a separate living room, and The Frank House, a two-storey former residence of 1,175 square feet that sleeps six — a rare option for families wanting a self-contained house rather than a room. Up the hillside, Contemporary Lodging trades period woodwork for radiant-heat floors and plate-glass windows framing the bridge and bay.

03Where to eat

For more than a decade, Cavallo Point's Michelin-star restaurant, Murray Circle, under the direction of Executive Chef Joseph Humphrey, was one of Northern California's top culinary destinations. In October 2022 the space was reborn as Sula, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with a menu by chef Michael Garcia, alongside the attached raw bar Sula Lounge and the more casual American bistro Farley.

Sula now serves modern American cuisine with cultural influences from around the world, from the dining room or the terrace looking straight across the bay to the bridge, open daily for breakfast, lunch, weekend brunch and dinner. Farley keeps things simpler, with an all-day menu featuring a burger topped with smoked mozzarella and red-pepper aioli, a steak sandwich, a fried chicken sandwich, and mains like a grilled Duroc pork chop and grilled Baja swordfish. The lodge also runs its own Cooking School, Mercantile and Art Gallery, with adaptable spaces for 10 to 300 guests, including a private chapel.

04Spa and wellbeing

The Healing Arts Center & Spa offers soothing natural treatments, hot tubs, a heated meditation pool and a Tea Bar. Facilities also include an infrared sauna, a Zen garden and outdoor fire pits, with services ranging from clinical massage and skincare to meditation, hypnotherapy and sessions with a visiting shaman. In October 2026 the spa's published hours were Monday to Thursday from 9.30am to 6pm and Friday to Sunday from 8am to 9pm, with the Tea Bar open daily from 11.30am to 5pm.

05The neighbourhood

Situated in a national park just minutes from San Francisco, the lodge is the nearest hotel to the Golden Gate Bridge offering its iconic views. Seventeen colonial renovated buildings with red roofs and covered porches sit among Adirondack chairs and pine, eucalyptus and cypress trees, arranged in a horseshoe around a green parade ground with a flagpole at its centre. Bike paths and hiking trails lead straight into the Marin Headlands, and San Francisco, Marin, and Napa's and Sonoma's celebrated wine country are all a short distance away.

06Making the most of a stay

Guests can join the resident historian for a walk around the grounds, touring Victorian homes, barracks, a gymnasium, a chapel, a jailhouse and other buildings that have been preserved and repurposed — a reminder that the manicured lawns were once a working army post. Resort amenities bundled into the daily rate include morning yoga, a wine welcome between 4pm and 6pm, weekend guided hikes, EV charging, Lexus vehicles for guest use, and a daily shuttle to San Francisco and the Sausalito ferry terminal. The Cooking School runs themed evenings through the season — in late 2026 these ranged from a Wagyu steakhouse night to a Destination Sicily class — making a one-night stay easy to extend into a short, food-led retreat.
