Domaine Le Mouflon d'Or stands at Pian Di Santo above the village of Zonza, in the Alta Rocca mountains of southern Corsica, a region more used to hikers' boots than luxury luggage. The building is a former Belle Époque hotel that has been meticulously renewed, its granite façade and chestnut-shaded park dating back more than a century to the island's age of grand mountain tourism. Owners Lise Canarelli and Anthony Bornea, both from the region, spent years restoring it before reopening on 27 May 2025 as a 5-star Relais & Châteaux estate. The MICHELIN Guide noticed almost immediately: a first Key came within months of opening, and the house has since been raised to Two MICHELIN Keys, a distinction for an exceptional stay. What makes it matter is precisely this inland setting – chestnut trees, Lebanon cedars and the Bavella peaks rather than another stretch of Corsican coastline.

MICHELIN Guide
Two MICHELIN Keys

25 rooms and caseddu bergeries around chestnut trees and granite, with MICHELIN Two Keys.

01The house

The estate unfolds over nearly 50 acres deep in the Alta Rocca, where the early-20th-century aristocratic residence stands among Lebanon cedars and ancient chestnuts that give the grounds their particular, cool shade even in summer. The building was painstakingly renovated to preserve its Belle Époque charm, enhancing it with contemporary elegance, so that the granite walls, roof lines and chimneys that first marked it out as a grand mountain stop remain legible beneath the new interiors.

Behind the project are Lise Canarelli and Anthony Bornea, a duo from the Alta Rocca and Porto-Vecchio: Anthony is a son of this land who had long dreamed of buying the building, while Lise brought her passion for decoration and architecture to every room. At the helm of day-to-day operations is Marie Favre, a Meilleure Ouvrière de France in hospitality, who oversees the house with the same rigour that earned her the title.

02Rooms and suites

The house counts 25 rooms and suites, bathed in natural light and set out across a scale that runs from intimate to generous. The Leccia room, measuring 26 m², can accommodate one or two people, as well as a baby aged 0 to 1, while the similarly sized Nuceta room adds a balcony. Larger still are the 35 m² Castagnu and Astratella rooms, the latter also with a balcony looking onto garden or mountain.

Insider tip

Open seasonally; the concierge organises hiking and waterfall excursions in the Alta Rocca.

For more space, three Junior Suites – Fica, Lariccio and Scopa – each measure 38 m², while the Suites Tigliu and L'Alizu reach 56 m² and the Suite Nociu extends to 60 m², all sleeping up to four with a maximum of three adults. Beyond the main house stand two bergeries from the 17th century, restored with full respect for island architecture and reborn as private caseddu for those who want to stay apart from the main building, among granite boulders and open sky.

03Where to eat

Dinner is served at A Nepita, the estate's restaurant, under an Art Deco glass veranda at the heart of the hotel. Chef Sébastien Chauchat, who has worked in Corsica for more than seventeen years, deliberately limits his culinary compositions to three or four ingredients each, in order to preserve the pure taste of produce harvested from his own vegetable garden – a discipline that turns the kitchen garden into the real engine of the menu, rather than a decorative afterthought.

The cooking follows a Corso-Mediterranean line, built on whatever the garden and the surrounding maquis are producing that week, and the restaurant also welcomes outside guests by reservation, a rarity for a hotel dining room this far from the coast.

04The bar and the pool

A pool bar sits beside the outdoor heated pool, which lies in a patio at the foot of a monumental Lebanon cedar – the same tree, and the same pool position, that generations of Zonza children remember from the building's earlier life as a public swimming spot. Inside, a bar occupies part of the ground floor near reception, its marble and crystal chandeliers setting the tone for an interior that mixes antiques with made-to-measure furniture rather than reaching for anything overtly grand.

05Spa and wellbeing

The NUCCA Spa opened in 2026 as a 1,200 m² wing devoted to rest, with five treatment cabins, one of them a double, an indoor heated pool, sauna and hammam, alongside new sensory experiences designed to echo the surrounding nature. Treatments use Nucca products developed from the Corsican maquis, extending the estate's locavore instincts from the kitchen garden to the treatment room, and the spa is open to outside visitors as well as hotel guests.

06The neighbourhood

Zonza sits inside Corsica's regional natural park, at the foot of the Aiguilles de Bavella, and is home to stages 13 and 14 of the legendary GR20 long-distance trail – reason enough why hikers already knew this village before any hotel did. Those who love hiking, mountain biking and canyoning find plenty to occupy them in the surrounding terrain, including the GR20 itself, with the heated outdoor pool waiting afterwards for recovery.

Within reach of the estate lie the Cucuruzzu archaeological site, the Coscione plateau and the Purcaraccia waterfalls, excursions the hotel's front desk is used to organising with a local guide for anyone wanting more than a glimpse of the Alta Rocca's granite wilderness.

07Making the most of a stay

Guests can combine mountain and coast through a concierge-arranged stay linking Domaine Le Mouflon d'Or with its sister Relais & Château property, the Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa by the sea, moving between the two estates across South Corsica rather than choosing one or the other. The concierge also arranges gourmet baskets for impromptu country lunches on the estate's grounds or deeper into the Alta Rocca's landscape, a practical way to turn an afternoon's drive into a proper meal with a view.
