On West 77th Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam, a townhouse dining room holds one of the Upper West Side's most exacting tables. Chef Christophe Bellanca opened Essential by Christophe here in December 2022, after more than three decades in some of France's and New York's most demanding kitchens, and the restaurant earned one MICHELIN Star within a year. It holds one MICHELIN Star. The name is a statement of intent: Bellanca's cooking strips modern French technique back to its essentials, built on pristine ingredients, house-made sauces and a studied quietness rather than flourish. Seasonal tasting menus run alongside a bar à la carte list and a pre-theatre menu timed for the nearby concert halls, and the room itself, set a short walk from Lincoln Center and Central Park, trades the Upper West Side's usual bustle for something closer to a private salon.

One MICHELIN Star French restaurant from chef Christophe Bellanca, steps from Lincoln Center.
01The room and the setting
Essential occupies the ground floor of a classic townhouse on West 77th Street, in a space with its own pedigree on the Upper West Side: it was previously home to Dovetail, one of the neighbourhood's longer-standing fine-dining rooms before Bellanca took it over. The dining room is prix fixe only, with a separate bar area set aside for neighbourhood regulars and à la carte eating, giving the restaurant two distinct registers under one roof.
A private dining room, designed by Parisian interior designer Caroline Egasse, seats up to 21 guests for seasonal menus built in collaboration with the chef, and the restaurant can be bought out in full for groups of up to 70 for larger events.

02The chef
Christophe Bellanca was raised in the Ardèche and trained in some of France's most storied houses: Georges Blanc in Vonnas, La Pyramide under Patrick Henriroux in Vienne, Régis Marcon in Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid, and six formative years with Anne-Sophie Pic at Maison Pic in Valence. He moved to the United States in 2004, was named Best New Chef by Angeleno magazine while at L'Orangerie in Los Angeles, and a meeting with Thomas Keller brought him to New York, where he became Executive Chef at Le Cirque and later Corporate Executive Chef for the BLT Restaurant Group.
Insider tipDinner Tuesday to Sunday; closed Monday; reservations recommended.
From 2011 he was Culinary Director for Joël Robuchon USA, overseeing L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon in New York and Miami; under his leadership the New York location held two MICHELIN Stars. He opened Essential by Christophe in 2022 on a philosophy of 'only the essentials,' and is both chef and owner of the restaurant.
03The cooking and what to order
Bellanca's seven-course Chef's Tasting Menu and four-course Discovery Menu both lean on seasonal, often maritime ingredients handled with classical French sauce-work and a light, deliberate Asian accent. On the current tasting menu, Hokkaido uni arrives with a crustacean royale, sora pickles and timut-wasabi velour; foie gras is worked into a raviolo with a choux rouge condiment and truffle bouillon, with a white alba truffle supplement on offer. Blue prawns are poached and finished with lime kosho, crispy genmaicha and dill and chive, scallop is lightly smoked and topped with gold ossetra caviar and champagne hazelnut, and confit amadai comes with green florets, satsuma and turmeric.
Further along, penne millerighe is dressed with Maine lobster and tarragon, and roasted poularde is served with chanterelles and albufera sauce. To finish, the choices run from a clementine-and-orange-blossom vacherin with Thai lime sorbet to a warm chocolate tart with roasted vanilla ice cream, or a Honeycrisp apple dessert with rum-raisin ice cream and Williams pear extraction. On select Tuesday-to-Thursday evenings a three-course pre-theatre menu is also offered for guests heading to a show nearby.

04Wine and drinks
The wine programme is built course by course rather than served as an afterthought: the tasting menu pairs each dish with a specific bottle, from a La Caravelle sparkling rosé Champagne with the uni to a 2023 Pouilly-Fuissé Tête de Cuvée from Château-Fuissé with the amadai, a 2022 Cantina Terlan 'Vorberg' Pinot Bianco Riserva with the lobster penne, and a 2020 Torres 'Celeste' Reserva from Ribera del Duero with the roasted poularde. Classic and reserve wine pairings are offered alongside a full non-alcoholic pairing for guests who prefer to skip alcohol entirely.
05The neighbourhood and booking
Essential sits a short walk from Lincoln Center, the Beacon Theatre, the American Museum of Natural History and Central Park, making it a natural stop before or after a concert or Broadway-adjacent show on the Upper West Side; the nearest subway access is the 1, 2 or 3 at 72nd Street, or the B and C at 81st Street by the museum. The New York Post named it the best restaurant on the Upper West Side in 2025, and it also received a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence that year. Dinner runs Tuesday to Thursday from 5:30pm to 9:30pm and Friday to Sunday from 5pm to 9:30pm, with the restaurant closed on Mondays; reservations are recommended given its size and single evening seating.
