Farra – Tribeca's wine bar with a two-star secret next door

Two doors from Atera on Worth Street, Farra borrows a cellar and a kitchen lineage, then cooks its own, compact, precise menu for twenty-odd guests a night.

Farra sits two doors from Atera on Worth Street, sharing that restaurant's wine cellar and much of its kitchen discipline, yet it presents itself with disarming modesty as a neighbourhood wine bar. The room holds only around twenty guests, gathered close to an open kitchen in a space narrow enough that every plate leaving the pass is visible from almost every seat. Farra is an old Basque word meaning "to drink", chosen because the idea here was always conviviality over formality — a place to share a glass and a plate rather than commit to a tasting menu. The result, a few years into service, is a sleek retreat that cooks with a precision owing everything to its neighbour's lineage while keeping its own identity as a full-fledged, à la carte restaurant. It has been Selected in the MICHELIN Guide, recognition that outsizes the room.

Farra cooks full plates, not charcuterie, in an open kitchen two doors from Atera on Worth Street.

01The room and the setting

Farra occupies a sleek, contained room at 71 Worth Street, on the southern edge of Tribeca within easy reach of the Financial District and City Hall. Worth Street places Farra at the southern edge of Tribeca, a few minutes from the Financial District and within easy range of City Hall. The dining counter wraps around an open kitchen, so watching the cooks plate scallop rice or finish a ravioli is part of the evening's entertainment. A sister restaurant to Atera, Farra is a neighborhood wine bar that seats around twenty, located two doors down from Atera.

02The chef and the kitchen lineage

Atera, the restaurant Farra sits beside and borrows from, was established in 2012 and has been led since its 2015 relaunch by the Danish chef Ronny Emborg. Atera was established in 2012 and its head chef is Ronny Emborg. Atera reopened in May 2015 with a completely new menu from the Danish chef. Farra does not simply trade on the name next door: a former Atera sous chef now anchors its own stoves, which is why the plating and seasoning feel of a piece with the restaurant that trained them. The former sous chef from Atera connects both operations at a practical level, meaning the cooking has been shaped by people who understand what a serious wine list demands of a plate.

03The cooking

Farra refuses the usual wine-bar shortcuts. Farra operates as a fully realised restaurant under a wine bar banner, with no charcuterie boards or cheese plates in sight. Instead the kitchen sends out composed small and large plates built for sharing — a register that has not gone unnoticed among critics who track the city's casual-dining tier. Opinionated About Dining ranked Farra third in its Casual North America list in 2024 and twelfth in 2025.

04What to order

The menu reads light-to-heavy, from a flatbread with spiced seed oil and yogurt butter to richer plates built for the table. Among the raw and cured dishes, the salmon tartare arrives with potato chip and nori, and the hamachi crudo is dressed with apple, pomegranate and hazelnut; for something bolder, the hash brown comes topped with Kaluga caviar and crème fraîche. The rice dish — scallop, egg yolk and trout roe — sits alongside shrimp ravioli in a miso-bonito bouillon, while heartier courses run to chicken schnitzel with snow pea and celeriac, and a beef tenderloin finished with truffle, bone marrow and pomme purée. On the about page, Farra lists its own halibut ravioli in shrimp bouillon and a dry-aged ribeye with jalapeño and milk stout among the dishes it is proudest of. To finish, the raspberry mousse with mango and white chocolate or a short plate of miso chocolate truffles close the meal without overreaching.

05Wine and drinks

The bottle list is curated by wine director Matthew Abbick, who pairs an evolving by-the-glass selection with an extensive cellar built to match the kitchen's ambition — the same cellar, in practice, that supplies Atera next door. That cellar has been recognised beyond the neighbourhood: Farra received Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence, with two glasses, in 2025. Farra holds Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence, two glasses, for 2025.

06When to go and booking

Farra opens Sunday to Thursday from 5.30pm to 10pm, and Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 11pm. With only around twenty seats and an open kitchen that turns every table into a front-row view, reservations are handled directly by the restaurant via email rather than through a booking platform — book ahead for weekend evenings, and treat a table here as suited to dates and small celebrations rather than a drop-in glass of wine.
