At Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, the day still begins with the same warmth that first surfaced in the Tamina Gorge long before anyone thought to bottle it. In 1242, hunters from the Pfäfers Abbey discovered a 36.5 °C warm spring in the Tamina Gorge, and that water has shaped this corner of Eastern Switzerland ever since. Today it feeds two thermal worlds at a five-star resort of 247 rooms and suites spread across four hotels, set in the alpine foothills an hour's drive from Zurich and surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape. The kitchen is led by Sven Wassmer, whose restaurant verve by sven is recommended for dinner as the resort's 1-Michelin-star restaurant, one of several dining rooms that together make this one of the most decorated hotel addresses in Switzerland. The MICHELIN Guide awards Grand Resort Bad Ragaz Three Keys, recognition for a stay built as much on architecture and service as on the mineral water running beneath it.

Three MICHELIN Keys

Four hotels, seven restaurants and a public and private thermal bath built around a spring discovered in 1242.

01The house

The spa town around the spring took its present shape in the nineteenth century. In 1868 the Glarner architect Bernhard Simon acquired the former Pfäfers monastery domain in Bad Ragaz from the canton, founded the Ragaz-Pfäfers spa and built new spa facilities, including the Grand Hotel Quellenhof. A few years later came the building that still defines the resort's identity: the Tamina Thermal bath was established in 1872, and was the first indoor thermal water pool in Europe, a milestone that turned a rural cure town into a destination for travellers from across the continent.

That nineteenth-century ambition survives in the resort's current shape: four hotels under one roof, each with its own character. The Palais, the oldest of them, combines over 250 years of history with the comfort of a modern boutique hotel, its individually designed rooms set inside an architecturally historic building with boutique charm dated back to 1774.

02Rooms and suites

The resort counts 247 rooms and suites, among them five signature suites and twenty-seven spa suites with direct access to thermal water. Quellenhof stands for a more classical, generously proportioned style of room; Hof is the modern, urban-leaning wing; the Tower holds the most private categories, some with their own spa and thermal water on the suite floor; and the Palais keeps the intimate, historic register of a small hotel within the larger whole. Depending on the house, outlooks run from the resort's park and gardens to the peaks that ring Bad Ragaz.

Insider tip

An hour's drive from Zurich; the resort runs its own golf courses and sits near the Tamina Gorge and the Heidiland region.

03Where to eat

Seven restaurants, with a total of 6 Michelin stars and 75 GaultMillau points between them, as well as three bars, a sushi takeaway, a bistro and a café, provide exquisite culinary delights across the resort. Three kitchens carry stars in their own right: Memories by Sven Wassmer, IGNIV by Andreas Caminada, and verve by sven, a line-up that turns a single Swiss resort into a small constellation of fine dining.

verve by sven is the resort's most visible address, a kitchen built around health and lifestyle cuisine from a chef who has earned recognition well beyond this valley, and in 2026 it carried 92 Falstaff points. Service runs from an à la carte breakfast through lunch to a late dinner, with dishes built on sustainable, fairly traded ingredients and a cocktail list that treats the bar as seriously as the plate. Elsewhere, the resort keeps its Swiss roots intact at the Zollstube, turns to clubhouse classics at the golf restaurant gladys, and closes the circle with the delicate Japanese creations at KOiSO.

04The bar

The verve by sven Bar pairs classic bar craft with an unmistakably Alpine accent: hand-mixed signature cocktails, award-winning spirits and a careful selection of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks, matched with regional cheese plates and light bites. Smart casual is the expected dress, reservations are neither possible nor required, and both hotel guests and outside visitors are welcome to take a seat on a first-come basis — dogs included.

05Spa and wellbeing

The exclusive thermal spa offers a range of different pools, all of which use body-temperature thermal water, split between a private Thermal Spa for guests seeking seclusion and the public Tamina Therme with its baths and sauna world. Spa treatments at the resort combine mindful touch, carefully tailored care, and the resort's sensuous thermal tradition, from massages and beauty rituals to signature treatments built around the thermal water itself.

Behind the baths sits one of the resort's less visible but defining assets: the resort is home to one of the best healthcare centers in Europe, where doctors and therapists use a unique holistic health philosophy to support guests on a longer-term path toward better health, rather than simply a few days of relaxation.

06The neighbourhood

Bad Ragaz sits an hour's drive from Zurich, in the foothills of the Alps in Eastern Switzerland, surrounded by a mountain landscape that opens straight onto hiking trails and ski resorts. The resort runs two golf courses of its own, an 18-hole championship layout and a 9-hole executive course, and acts as a natural base for exploring the Heidiland region nearby, where meadows and the Tamina Gorge itself give the spring its name.

07Making the most of a stay

The resort's own Stay & Dine package pairs a night's stay and breakfast with a dinner recommendation at verve by sven and access to both the Thermal Spa and the public Tamina Therme, a straightforward way to sample the kitchen and the baths in a single visit. Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is a member of Leading Hotels of the World, and was named GaultMillau Hotel of the Year in 2021, markers of a reputation built as much on consistency as on any single feature.
