On the shingle edge of Lake Maggiore, where the Alps part just enough for palms and camellias to thrive, Hotel Eden Roc has spent more than half a century as Switzerland's only true beach resort. Built in 1971, the hotel is composed of three structures which were once three separate properties, one of which was called the Eden Roc, and the addition of the Marina building in 2010 introduced nautical accents and a private dock, anchoring the resort in the rhythm of the lake. Ticino designer Carlo Rampazzi has shaped its interiors ever since, turning the merged hotels into an eccentric hybrid, part dolce vita reverie, part alpine escape. The MICHELIN Guide awards Hotel Eden Roc Two Keys, and its restaurant La Brezza, led by chef Marco Campanella, holds two MICHELIN stars and 19 GaultMillau points, serious kitchen ambition on a shoreline better known in Switzerland for grand belle-époque hotels than for sand.

Built in 1971 and expanded over time, Eden Roc is Ascona's only lakeside hotel with a private beach, marina and 10,000 m² garden.

01The house

Built in 1971, the hotel is composed of three structures which were once three separate properties, one of them the original Eden Roc. The hotel was combined in the winter of 1998/1999 with its neighbouring property, formerly the Hotel Europe au Lac, and Ticino interior designer Carlo Rampazzi created a masterpiece in combining the two, adding a picturesque inner courtyard, his own furniture designs, wall paintings and marble floors that recall an Italian palazzo.

A later renovation handed the exterior to architect Fiorenzo Tresoldi, a school friend of Rampazzi working with him for the first time; he pictured the new building as a sailing yacht gliding gently over the sparkling waves of Lake Maggiore, an idea made literal in large windows and glass balustrades on the expansive balconies that frame the view over the lake. The separate Marina building, added in 2010, brought nautical accents and a private dock to what is now Ascona's only hotel with direct beach access.

02Rooms and suites

The hotel's rooms and suites are each treated more like a residential vignette than a standard hotel box, the result of Rampazzi's uncompromising hand. In the left wing he filled rooms with vivid colour combinations, bold shapes and mixed materials, while the right wing takes a more restrained, if still youthful, approach. Beyond the main house, the separate Eden Roc Marina building holds 16 rooms, a casual restaurant and direct access to the hotel's water sports programme, a short stroll from the Piazza and old town.

Insider tip

Closed in parts over winter; book La Brezza well ahead, it opens Wednesday to Sunday evening only.

03Where to eat

Dinner choices range from beach-club ease to serious gastronomy. At the main Restaurant Eden Roc, Sicilian chef Salvatore Frequente serves Mediterranean delicacies, plant-based menus and traditional Grosses Pièces every evening, rewarded with 15 GaultMillau points. A few steps along the water, Restaurant Marina serves daily lunch and dinner, built around homemade pasta and seasonal lake-country produce.

The kitchen that carries the hotel's name furthest is La Brezza, open Wednesday to Sunday evening and rated two MICHELIN stars and 19 GaultMillau points, where chef Marco Campanella works a tasting menu built on precise, light cooking. Down at the water's edge sits Lakehouse La Casetta, open daily for lunch and dinner and carrying 14 GaultMillau points for its fish dishes. The small boathouse has history well beyond its kitchen: in 1945 this building became the epicentre of world politics, hosting the secret Operation Sunrise negotiations that ended the Second World War in Italy.

04The bar

Evenings tend to drift toward the Eden Bar, a terrace strung between palm trees for a cappuccino by day or a classic cocktail after dark, and the more casual Marina Bar & Lounge, a beach-club style spot built for aperitivo with the lake and the hotel's own Riva motor launches moored just beyond the tables.

05Spa and wellbeing

Carlo Rampazzi also designed the Eden Roc Spa, tying it to the hotel's natural surroundings, which since 2010 has occupied 2,000 sqm on the lake shore. The water world runs to four separate pools, an indoor-outdoor pool heated to 32°C, a cooler Marina Pool, an outdoor pool by the main building and a hydrotherapy basin, alongside a Finnish sauna, sanarium, steam room and a separate ladies' sauna area. Treatments draw on Pharmos Natur and Cellcosmet skincare, and the spa's own Dream Butler ritual closes the day with foot compresses, a short massage and a room prepared for sleep.

All of it sits inside a 10,000 m² Mediterranean garden that runs down to a palm-fringed shoreline, with direct lake swimming possible from April to October and a private marina for the hotel's two Riva boats, an Aquarama and a Rivale 52, available for charter.

06The neighbourhood

Ascona's old town and car-free lakefront Piazza are a short walk away, but the hotel's own grounds hold a piece of local history. Casa Epper, the former home and studio of Expressionist artist Ignaz Epper and his wife Mischa, now functions as a museum, garden and occasional bocce court, a reminder that this stretch of Lake Maggiore has long been a refuge for artists such as Hermann Hesse and Wassily Kandinsky. The hotel's own Art Butler now curates etching workshops and gallery walks into town, carrying that tradition forward.

07Making the most of a stay

Business magazine Bilanz has named Hotel Eden Roc Switzerland's best holiday hotel for the fourth time, and the reasons are easiest to see off-season: the nearby golf course stays open through winter, Milan is close enough for a day's shopping, and the lake's mild climate keeps the garden usable for most of the year. The hotel belongs to the Tschuggen Collection, the Swiss family-owned group behind alpine properties in St. Moritz and Arosa, and guests moving between its houses can expect the same attention to design that Rampazzi has given Eden Roc for decades.
