On a curve of Lake Wörthersee in Techelsberg, Hotel Schloss Seefels occupies one of the lake's most storied addresses. The Gatsby-style villa, perched on Lake Wörthersee since 1860, still carries that quiet weight of history, but with a surprisingly playful edge. Today it holds 67 rooms and suites, and it is one of four boutique properties — one on a lake, one on a mountain, one by the sea, and one in Vienna — run by the Austrian hotelier Helena Ramsbacher. Guests come as much for the architecture as for the art: more than 200 contemporary pieces, including works from the Haselsteiner Collection, are displayed throughout the property, from public spaces to corridors. Then there is the pool, accessible via a wooden dock that juts out into the turquoise lake, enclosed only on the sides and heated so swimming in the Wörthersee is possible through all four seasons. The MICHELIN Guide rewards this combination of villa and gallery with Two Keys, denoting an exceptional stay.

Hotel Schloss Seefels sits directly on Lake Wörthersee in Techelsberg, Carinthia, near the resort town of Pörtschach.
01The house
Originally built as a castle-like villa in 1860, it evolved into a renowned hotel blending classic architecture with avant-garde interiors and art. On the outside, the Seefels is what it has always been: a jewel of Wörthersee architecture on probably the most beautiful spot on the lake, while a later redesign made the interior, by the hotel's own account, one of the most striking 5-star castle and boutique hotels in southern Austria. The building sits inside a private park that includes walking paths, hidden seating areas and sculptural elements that give the property a sense of privacy even when the hotel is busy — a 30,000 square-metre garden running down to the shore.
Schloss Seefels is run by hotelière Helena Ramsbacher, who in 2025 was named Hotelière of the Year by Falstaff alongside Two MICHELIN Keys, a Gault Millau toque rating and Falstaff forks for the hotel's kitchen. Her own description of the place — "a bit crazy, very chic, and the best of everything" — sums up a house that treats a 19th-century lakeside villa as both a working hotel and a living gallery, something staff call the "HOseum". The hotel typically closes for a short break at the turn of the year before reopening for its Advent season; in 2026 it returns to full service on 26 November after its annual leave.

02Rooms and suites
None of the 67 rooms is alike: one might surround you with tropical birds, another with soft Venetian pastels, but every window frames the lake like an impressionist painting. Categories range from compact Small Superior rooms with a Christian Lacroix-patterned interior to Park Suites and the two-level Udo Jürgens Suite, each hung with a different artist from the Haselsteiner Collection — Eduard Bäumer in one Junior Suite, Hartwig Ebersbach or Karel Appel in a Park Suite, Venini lamps of Murano glass as a recurring detail throughout.
Insider tipComplimentary pick-up from Pörtschach/Wörthersee station; Klagenfurt Airport about 17 km away.
Many rooms have balconies overlooking the lake; all have high-end amenities like Dyson supersonic hairdryers, Nespresso machines, plush bathrobes, and stocked minibars.
03Where to eat
Dining runs through three settings: the lakeside restaurant La Terrasse, the pink-hued Pink Birkin Salon, and the summer-only Porto Bello & Lounge, all under head chef Richard Hessl. At La Terrasse, 3 Gault Millau toques, 4 Falstaff forks, and 3 Slow Food Carinthian snails say everything about the excellent and consistent quality of a kitchen built on proximity: chef Richard Hessl obtains 80% of the food from within a radius of 70 kilometers, with fish from the Wörthersee and Wagyu beef from the Lavanttal landing on the same day they're caught or raised.
The Pink Birkin Salon, decorated with Hungarian artist Attila Adorján's photorealistic paintings of the Hermès Birkin bag, serves the same kitchen's cuisine — a combination of regional and continental cooking complemented with a touch of Asia, also recognised with 3 Gault Millau toques and 95 Falstaff points. In summer, Porto Bello & Lounge becomes the design hot-spot on Lake Wörthersee, open from June to September, built around fish and homemade pasta served almost at the waterline, with fishermen delivering the day's catch straight past the terrace tables.
04The bar
The Schlossbar deals in gold and ruby-red upholstery, more than 80 whiskeys and classics like a bottle-aged Negroni, poured by the hotel's own bartenders on a terrace that catches the last light over the Karawanken range across the water. It is the natural stop before or after dinner, and in high season doubles as a stage for themed tastings — including an exclusive Louis XIII cognac evening paired with chef Hessl's cooking in the Pink Birkin Salon.
05Spa and pool
The spa is carved around the lake's natural rock: a 1,100 m² area carved around natural rocks, featuring multiple saunas, a steam room, a salt infrared room, and relaxation areas with panoramic lake views. Its signature room pairs a golden laconium and Bisazza mosaic tiles with a jungle-green colour scheme, and six treatment rooms use products from La Maison Valmont and Sisley Paris for facials, massages and manicures.
Outside, the heated lake pool is the hotel's real signature — reached by a wooden dock, kept at a steady 28°C and enclosed only on the sides, so bathers can watch the Wörthersee move around them even in winter, stepping straight from the water into heated bathrobes waiting on the dock's sunny terrace. A private beach, sunbathing lawn and premium gym with Technogym equipment sit a few steps further along the shoreline.
06The neighbourhood
Techelsberg sits on the quieter, northern shore of Lake Wörthersee, a short hop from the resort town of Pörtschach and from Klagenfurt, Carinthia's capital, with Klagenfurt Airport around 17 kilometres away. Trains from Vienna or Salzburg stop at Pörtschach/Wörthersee station, two kilometres from the hotel, with a complimentary pick-up for guests. Further afield, the medieval Hochosterwitz Castle, the Gothic pilgrimage church at Maria Saal and the wooden Pyramidenkogel observation tower are all within reach for a half-day out, while the Alpe-Adria golf courses across the Italian and Slovenian borders can be reached from the hotel's own jetty.
07Making the most of a stay
Most of a Seefels stay plays out on or near the water: paddleboards and pedal boats are free to take out from the beach, and the hotel's own motorboats run sunset cruises with Champagne and gourmet appetisers, as well as a water shuttle to the Golf Club Dellach across the lake. On land there are two tennis courts, a padel court and a putting green set into the 30,000 m² castle garden. Across its seasons the hotel also runs set events — an Italian sauna-ritual weekend called Hot October, a harvest festival with a field mass in the Schlosspark, and an Advent market along the shore from late November — worth timing a visit around.
