On a wooded rise above St Helena, where Meadowood Lane leaves the Silverado Trail and climbs through oak and madrone, Meadowood Napa Valley occupies 250 private acres that have anchored Napa Valley's social and wine life for decades. It began as a club for local winemakers in the 1960s and opened its first hotel rooms the following decade; since 1979 it has been owned and run by Harlan Estate founder H. William Harlan together with E. Stanley Kroenke. The 2020 Glass Fire tore through the property, destroying its three-Michelin-starred restaurant, the clubhouse and dozens of guest rooms; Meadowood reopened the following spring on its surviving ground and has rebuilt gradually since under wine-country architect Howard Backen. Today the resort counts just 36 suites and rooms, and the MICHELIN Guide now gives it Three MICHELIN Keys.

Private wooded estate north-east of St Helena, reached by its own drive off the Silverado Trail.
01The house
Meadowood's own history runs parallel to the story of California itself: as San Francisco grew from a small port into an international centre of culture, Napa Valley, an hour north, became one of the world's most admired winegrowing regions, and Meadowood grew alongside it. Founded in the 1960s as a club for local winemakers, it opened its first hotel rooms the following decade, and since 1979 it has belonged to Harlan Estate's H. William Harlan and investor E. Stanley Kroenke, who still run it today as a private club and intimate country hotel in one.
The Glass Fire that swept through the hills north-east of St Helena in late September 2020 destroyed the building housing the three-Michelin-starred Restaurant at Meadowood, a kitchen that had held three stars since 2010, along with the casual Grill at Meadowood and the golf shop. About half of the estate's structures burned in total, including the clubhouse, event spaces and 42 guest rooms. Meadowood reopened the following spring on the ground that had survived, then rebuilt gradually, again under the direction of wine-country architect Howard Backen, who had shaped the original estate.

02Rooms and suites
Thirty-six suites and rooms remain on the estate, arranged across five configurations — Hill House, Treeline Suite, Oakview Room, Treetop Room and Cottage Room — each built in Backen's rustic-refined idiom of exposed beams, white wood-framed walls and stone fireplaces. The largest, Hill House, is a one-bedroom retreat of some 1,745 square feet with two separate terraces, each fitted with its own fire pit, and a private soaking tub and outdoor shower off the bedroom.

Every stay runs on a no-resort-fee policy, with a welcome glass of wine at Forum, electric-vehicle charging and bicycles provided for exploring the estate's hillside paths and the valley beyond.
03Where to eat
Forum opened in October 2022 as the estate's new all-day restaurant, designed once again by Howard Backen with interiors by Lindsey Rion, built on what was once a tennis court beneath a white aluminium roof with a bright yellow underside and glass walls on every side. The dining room seats around a hundred guests at cream bouclé booths and a ten-seat bar, with a twenty-person private dining room for occasions, and a kitchen now led by executive chef Alejandro Ayala serving breakfast through dinner daily, plus weekend brunch.
The seasonal Terrace Café supplements Forum for guests and Meadowood Club members, while in-room dining rounds out the estate's food offer for those who prefer not to leave their terrace.

04The bar
Forum's bar and outdoor lounge carry the estate's drinking culture, from a weekend brunch roving bar cart mixing cocktails tableside to an evening list of handcrafted drinks, craft beers and wine by the glass. The lounge menu leans toward small, shareable things — raw oysters, tater tots topped with crème fraîche and caviar — built for an hour on the patio before or after dinner.
05Spa and wellbeing
Forbes Travel Guide has awarded both the hotel and the Meadowood Spa Five Stars, making this the only wine-country estate in Napa Valley to hold the distinction for both. The spa works on an all-suite system, so every guest keeps a private room with its own bathroom and steam shower rather than moving between shared spaces; the suites were designed by Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects.
Beyond the treatment suites, separate men's and women's relaxation gardens each hold a sauna, steam room, mineral soaking pool and outdoor shower, while the Tree House Retreat offers a room partly open to the elements, with its own fireplace and a hand-hammered copper tub for custom baths. The signature Essential Journey begins with a personalised aromatherapy steam before the chosen massage, facial or body treatment, using Glycelene, a skincare line exclusive to the spa and blended with California poppy, bay laurel and black walnut gathered on the estate.
06The neighbourhood
Meadowood sits in wooded hills north-east of St Helena, reached by a private drive off the Silverado Trail. Within a few minutes' drive lie Beringer Vineyards, the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, and St Helena's own restaurant row, including Charlie's Napa Valley and Cook St Helena — close enough for an afternoon in town, far enough to feel like a different valley entirely.
07Making the most of a stay
The Wine Center, open to Meadowood guests, Club members and Napa Valley Reserve members, runs curated tastings and courses led by professional wine educators, sommeliers and winegrowers, covering Napa's terroir alongside wine regions worldwide. Five outdoor tennis courts, framed by forested hillside and staffed by resident pros, sit a short walk from three swimming pools built for laps, lounging and family afternoons, while hiking paths wind through the estate's wooded canyons for guests who want the 250 acres on foot rather than from a lounge chair.
