On the southern edge of Bryant Park, in a pocket of Midtown that happens to be thick with Sichuan dining rooms, Peppercorn Station occupies 66 West 39th Street with a bright, industrial-sleek interior that sets it apart from its neighbours. It opened in February 2022, bringing a contemporary take on Szechuan cooking to a stretch of the Garment District better known for wholesale fabric than mala heat. The room pairs raw, factory-inspired surfaces with neon accents and a soundtrack chosen to match the kick of the food, while the kitchen builds its menu around sharing plates that balance heat, spice and umami rather than chase fire for its own sake. It holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, the guide's mark for good quality, good value cooking, recognition that has made it a reliable stop for diners who want serious Sichuan flavour without a serious bill. Three years after opening in New York, the owners carried the same formula across the Hudson to Jersey City, proof that the format travels.

Industrial-sleek Sichuan dining room on West 39th Street, a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand since joining the guide.
01The room and the setting
The dining room leans into an industrial mood: exposed surfaces, bright overhead light and jolts of neon colour that read more workshop-after-hours than traditional Chinese restaurant. The space is brightly lit and modern, blending industrial-inspired design elements with neon accents and a carefully curated playlist that enhances the overall dining experience. It is a deliberate contrast to the deep red-and-gold look many Sichuan restaurants favour, and it has become part of the restaurant's identity along a block that runs along the southern edge of Bryant Park, offering a bold and authentic take on contemporary Szechuan cuisine, standing out among the many Sichuan dining options in Midtown with its vibrant and inviting atmosphere.
02The cooking
The kitchen works from a menu built for sharing rather than solo plates, with dishes designed to balance rather than overwhelm the palate. The menu highlights the complex and layered flavours of Szechuan cooking, balancing heat, spice, and umami with precision, with dishes crafted for sharing that reflect the essence of traditional Chinese meals. The approach draws on classic Sichuan technique — fermented chilli, numbing green peppercorn, slow-braised cuts — reworked for a New York dining room without losing the point of the cuisine.
Insider tipOpen daily 11:30am–9:30pm; book ahead for weekend dinner.
03What to order
For those who want the kitchen's signature heat without committing to a whole fish, the Dry Chili Fried Chicken at $23.00 and Kung Pao Chicken are reliable, classic choices from the same list.

04The neighbourhood
The address sits on a short run of West 39th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, a block from Bryant Park and the Beaux-Arts reading rooms of the New York Public Library, in the Garment District end of Midtown Manhattan. It is a working neighbourhood by day — wholesale textile showrooms, office towers, Korean restaurants a few streets south — that empties out in the evening, which is when the restaurant's lit-up frontage does the most work drawing people in off the park. The reach of the brand now extends beyond Manhattan: Peppercorn Station has also expanded its reach with a second location in Jersey City, allowing even more diners to experience its refined take on Szechuan flavours. That Jersey City room, inside the Provost Square complex, has an interior that is industrial-inspired to be modern and sleek, the same visual language as the New York original.
05When to go and booking
The New York room is open every day of the week, serving lunch straight through into dinner. Reservations can be made directly or through the restaurant's own booking link; given the room's modest size and its Bib Gourmand profile, booking ahead for dinner on weekends is worth doing rather than relying on a walk-in table.
