Four neoclassical townhouses on Petersplatz, in the shadow of the Baroque Peterskirche, share one continuous history: banking by day, Mozart by night. Four neoclassical buildings have been brought together as one to create an elegant, ultra-luxury hotel; one was formerly the headquarters of the Erste Group Bank, while another contained an apartment where Mozart lived and composed The Abduction from the Seraglio. Opened in August 2022 as Rosewood's first address in the German-speaking world, the hotel kept the bank's marble corridors and stucco ceilings rather than erasing them, right down to the Erste Bank Group's crest of a golden bee, still visible within the central pediment of the façade facing St Peter's Church. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Two Keys, singling out a rooftop restaurant and bar whose windows and terraces survey Vienna's rooftops. Few hotels in the Innere Stadt wear their ledger-book past so lightly.

Two MICHELIN Keys

Four joined 1835 townhouses on Vienna's Petersplatz, reborn as a Two-Key Rosewood hotel beside the Peterskirche.

01The house

BEHF Architects transformed four historically significant buildings — once the headquarters of Erste Bank — into a luxurious five-star hotel in the heart of Vienna. The Rosewood Vienna is located in a series of grand townhomes designed in 1835 by architect Alois Pichl, who worked primarily for aristocrats and members of the House of Habsburg. A new passageway connects Petersplatz and Tuchlauben, stitching the old banking halls into a single route through the block. Marble corridors and staircases, stucco ceilings, and parquet floors remain intact, while the bank's protected former boardroom has been repurposed as a 100-square-metre salon. The rooftop addition takes its name from that founding date: THE1835, the rooftop bar, is named after the year the building was constructed.

02Rooms and suites

Housed in a restored 19th-century former bank building, steps from St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Graben, the hotel features 103 beautifully appointed guestrooms, including 39 suites, spread across four joined buildings whose floor plans never quite line up corridor to corridor. City-named suites include the St Stephen's, Hofburg and St Peter's Wellness Suites, each oriented toward the landmark it borrows its name from. The St Peter's Suite is a loft-like one-bedroom accommodation distinguished by its uniquely canted, floor-to-ceiling windows framing direct views of the Peterskirche from both bedroom and living room.

Insider tip

Enter from Petersplatz opposite the Peterskirche; the Graben and Kohlmarkt shopping streets are a minute's walk.

The newest addition, Royal Graben House, is one of the largest at the hotel, offering 175 square metres of refined living space, occupying a prominent corner of the historic building overlooking the famous Graben and its stately façades. It is anchored by a remarkable 1830s original stucco ceiling preserved from the space's former role as the boardroom of the Erste Bank. At the top of the house, the 178-square-metre Royal Hoffmann House includes a lavish master bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining room fit for eight guests, with views of St Peter's Church from a French balcony. Throughout, curated artwork from Paris-based Atelier27 reflects the city's rich cultural heritage.

03Where to eat

Neue Hoheit occupies the sixth floor, serving European brasserie fare with a core of refined Austrian classics, its terrace arranged around a mature pine tree and looking onto a mural by Viennese street artist KRANF. A josper grill of beef, fish and vegetables complements charcuterie and seafood, and large floor-to-ceiling windows afford striking views of Old Town rooftops, St Peter's Church and St Stephen's Cathedral. The building's other famous former tenant is remembered downstairs: it was here that Mozart courted Constanze Weber, and the ground-floor café bears her first name, displaying old paintings from the hotel's archives in which Petersplatz and the Graben can be spotted. Regulars, by one account, order the signature Gugelhupf cake to end dinner.

04The bar

THE1835, the rooftop bar named after the year the building was constructed, is reached by a short climb from the sixth floor; the copper-green dome of the Peterskirche fills the foreground, and beyond it the spires and gilded flourishes of Vienna's skyline reach toward the Gothic silhouette of St Stephen's Cathedral. One floor down, Neue Hoheit Bar keeps the same outlook at a brighter, day-drinking pitch. In the lobby, hand-painted walls decorate the Salon Aurelie, a gentler register for coffee or an aperitif before heading up.

05Spa and wellbeing

Asaya Spa occupies the hotel's higher floors and is said to be the first in Austria to partner with Augustinus Bader. A sauna, steam room and experience shower complete the offerings. The relaxation room is particularly striking, its chaise longues sitting beneath an emerald-hued ceiling that mirrors the colour of the Peterskirche dome across the square.

06The neighbourhood

The hotel sits on Petersplatz, a compact square in the heart of Vienna's Old Town dominated by the Baroque splendour of the Peterskirche. It is steps from the celebrated Graben, Kohlmarkt and Tuchlauben pedestrian streets, renowned for luxury shops and restaurants. Further into the Old Town sit the Gothic cathedral of St Stephen and the Hofburg Imperial Palace complex, the seat of the Habsburgs, with prized collections of silver, porcelain, tapestries, furniture and art, including Old Masters at the nearby Kunsthistorisches Museum.

07Making the most of a stay

Reserve Neue Hoheit well ahead for dinner — the terrace tables around the pine tree go first — and time an evening at THE1835 for dusk: cocktails are best ordered as the warm evening light illuminates the Peterskirche church dome. For a quieter half-hour before the city wakes, the spa's relaxation room and sauna are among the first corners of Petersplatz open each morning.
