Royal-Riviera – the Belle Époque palace that became a Riviera villa

At the narrow neck of the Cap-Ferrat peninsula, where the coast road from Nice drops toward the Baie des Fourmis, the Royal-Riviera has watched the Mediterranean since November 1904, when it opened as the Panorama Palace with 150 bathroomed rooms, a tennis court and a boat-house for six open sea-going craft. It has since been a time-share for British aristocrats, a wartime school for refugee children, and, after a 1988 closure and a 1999 relaunch under hotelier Grace Leo, a neo-Hellenistic reinvention in olive, amber and sienna. Today the house counts 96 rooms and suites split between the original building and the garden villa l'Orangerie, a rare private sandy beach for this stretch of coast, and grounds shaped by landscape designer Jean Mus. The MICHELIN Guide awards the hotel one Key, and its restaurant, La Table du Royal, a Plate.

One MICHELIN Key

Belle Époque palace turned villa-style five-star, one MICHELIN Key, private sandy beach, Jean Mus gardens.

01The house

Some have it that the hotel's original owner, Paris Singer, fell for the dancer Isadora Duncan within these walls, and that the composer Prokofiev passed through in 1908. Wartime turned romance into duty: during the First World War, while neighbouring palaces became hospitals, the hotel served as a school for war orphans and allied Serb refugees fleeing Austrian and German troops. In 1921 its new owners renamed it Hotel Bedford.

The building's modern chapter began in the 1980s, when the Belgian owner Monsieur De Bruyn bought the property and closed it in 1988 for an extensive overhaul. A decade later, in 1998, the hotel changed hands again, and Grace Leo was brought in as management consultant from January 1999 with the task of giving the Grande Dame a new identity without losing her status. Her renovation of the 78 rooms and suites was overseen with a design team that included Nye Basham, a designer she discovered while he was working as artistic director to Ralph Lauren. Breaking with the old Belle Époque look, they dressed the ground floor in a neo-Hellenistic palette of olive-green, amber and Sienna brown, aiming for the feel of a private Mediterranean villa rather than a hotel lobby.

02Rooms and suites

The hotel holds 96 rooms and suites in total: 78 in the original building, most looking out to sea, and a further 18 in the private villa l'Orangerie, set back in the garden around the pool. Categories run from Junior Suites with sea view, balcony or terrace, through Prestige rooms facing the Baie des Fourmis, to Deluxe, Superior and Standard rooms with mountain or garden outlooks. Rooms in the main building carry a 1950s-tinged decoration with pops of lime green, tangerine and lilac against the whitewash, while the Orangerie's rooms open through wide wooden doors onto balconies and terraces overlooking the pool and the Renaissance-style gardens.

Insider tip

Open nearly year-round; La Table du Royal runs April–October only.

03Where to eat

La Table du Royal is the gastronomic table, run as what the house calls a four-handed act: Chef Geoffroy Szamburski in the kitchen and pastry chef Lucas Simoncini on desserts. The pair first worked together in 2010 in the kitchens of a Monegasque hotel; Szamburski then spent five years in Martinique before the two reunited at the Royal-Riviera in 2019. Produce is sourced along a short supply chain running from Ventimiglia to the bay of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and through the hinterland of Nice, served on a terrace that looks one way to the Baie des Fourmis and the other over a pool set among fragrant planting. The restaurant keeps a seasonal calendar, open from April to October, dinner service Thursday to Monday, and carries a MICHELIN Plate distinction.

By the pool, Jasmin Grill & Lounge takes a looser line, its tandoori oven turning out Indian-leaning dishes alongside more familiar Mediterranean plates, an itinerary the hotel describes as running from the road to India to the Greek-revival Villa Kerylos down the coast. On Saturday afternoons it hosts Le Goûter du Royal, a tea-time sitting from 3.30pm to 6pm.

04The bar

Two bars bookend a stay: Bar le Cap and Bar Jasmin, the latter doubling as the pool bar where guests can order a cocktail with their feet still in the water. The house marks the calendar in small ways rather than grand gestures — this October, for Pink October, it partnered with the breast-cancer charity Rose Azur on a pear-and-hibiscus pastry and a matching signature cocktail, available through the month.

05Spa, pool and the beach

The Wellness Center works with THALGO's Marine Intelligence range, alongside a fitness room, sauna and steam room. The outdoor pool is heated and open all year, from 9am to 6pm with a lifeguard on duty, free of charge for guests and reserved for residents only. Below the gardens, shaped by landscape designer Jean Mus, lies one of the few private sandy beaches left on the Cap-Ferrat peninsula, open from mid-May to the end of September, with water sports run by the partner outfit Cap-Ferrat Watersports.

06The neighbourhood

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat began as a fishing village and still shelters the Rade de Villefranche on one side and the Baie des Fourmis, toward Beaulieu, on the other; worth the walk are the old port, the 18th-century Chapelle Sainte-Hospice and its Vierge Noire. The hotel sits only around fifteen minutes on foot from the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, the Italian Renaissance-style villa with its seven themed gardens, and within easy reach of the Greek-style Villa Kerylos. Nice and Monaco are both a short drive away, placing the Royal-Riviera at the entrance to what locals call the Riviera's Golden Triangle.

07Making the most of a stay

Independently owned and a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Royal-Riviera sits a notch quieter than its grander neighbours Cap Estel and the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, trading their scale for a more confidential address with the same coastline. It also keeps one of the longest seasons on this part of the Riviera, running close to year-round while several of the grand palaces shut for winter. Families are well looked after, with a dedicated Royal Kid programme and more than 38 connecting rooms across the two buildings — reason enough, along with the beach and the gardens, to treat this as a base rather than a stopover.
