Behind a pair of wrought-iron gates on place du Chancelier Adenauer, a few streets from the Arc de Triomphe, stands the only château-hotel in Paris. The neoclassical mansion began its life in 1892 as the home of the Thiers Foundation, built on the site of the city's first balloon landing field, and for over a century it supported young scholars with lodging and scholarships. In the 1980s the building became the Saint James Club, run in the tradition of London's gentlemen's clubs, before opening as a hotel and private club in 1991 and joining Relais & Châteaux in 2011. Reimagined by interior designer Laura Gonzalez in 2021, who achieved what one account calls a perfect symbiosis of plant life and art deco, the house still carries the proportions and hush of a private residence. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Three MICHELIN Keys, and its restaurant, Bellefeuille, holds one MICHELIN Star.

A neoclassical mansion of 1892 turned hotel and private club, with a Michelin-starred table and a Guerlain spa.
01The house
The majestic residence began its life as a home to the Thiers Foundation created in 1892 on the site of Paris' first balloon landing field, and for over a century it supported brilliant young students by attributing scholarships and comfortable living conditions. In the 1980s the building became home to the Saint James Club of Paris, in the great tradition of London gentlemen's clubs, remaining a symbol of French cultural and intellectual life, before it was run as a hotel and club from 1991 and joined Relais & Châteaux in 2011.
In 2021 the interiors were given a fresh identity by designer Laura Gonzalez, who has achieved a perfect symbiosis of plant life and art deco across the public rooms, while the gardens, nearly an acre of gravel paths, centuries-old trees and clipped hedges, were reinterpreted by landscape architect Xavier de Chirac.

02Rooms and suites
The 50 rooms and suites are arranged like guest rooms in the home of an art collector, mixing an art deco spirit with contemporary detail, 18th-century florals meeting geometric pattern, rich fabric and Versailles parquet. Boudoir rooms run from 215 to 265 square feet, Superior rooms from 290 to 365 square feet on the first or second floor or on the garden level with a terrace, and Deluxe rooms, at 365 to 415 square feet, look over the garden or, on the top floor, the rooftops of Paris, their marble bathrooms fitted with a tub or walk-in shower.
Insider tipDinner-only public access at Bellefeuille; book ahead, smart casual dress required.
Each of the 26 suites, from 525 to 625 square feet, tells its own story, like a treasure brought back from distant shores by a collector with exquisite taste, with remarkable ceiling height and a medley of art deco spirit and contemporary detail. Beyond the main house, the property also holds two private pavilions and a four-apartment villa for longer, more secluded stays.
03Where to eat
Bellefeuille, the hotel's gastronomic dining room, holds one MICHELIN Star under chef Grégory Garimbay, who took over the kitchen in February 2024 after winning a star within a year at the centuries-old Auberge Nicolas Flamel. His cooking is plant-forward, mineral and iodised, giving vegetables precedence over meat and seafood, and runs on produce from the hotel's own organic garden and orchard in Nonville, Seine-et-Marne, delivered by electric vehicle, a commitment recognised with a MICHELIN Green Star and three écotable macarons.
Dinner is served Monday to Friday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and, unlike breakfast and lunch which are reserved for residents and Club members, the evening table is open to all.

04The bar
The Library Bar occupies the building's former study room, its shelves still holding some 12,000 volumes, and remains the most atmospheric corner of the house, a cocktail counter dressed as a gentlemen's club. Every Saturday and Sunday between 3.30pm and 5pm, pastry chef Coline Doussin sends out a Tea Time of sweet and savoury creations alongside the drinks list, while outside, the garden terrace sits beneath a pergola for cocktails and lighter meals in fine weather.
05Spa and wellbeing
Spa Guerlain spreads across more than 400 square metres, with three treatment rooms including one for couples, a well-being area, gym and a pool that is the room's quiet centrepiece: a long basin lit by a skylight, framed by a vaulted stone ceiling carved with Greco-Roman detail, with a bas-relief by François Mascarello adding a meditative note alongside the hammam and sauna. Among the signature rituals is the Orchidée Impériale anti-ageing massage, which concentrates on the face and upper back, stimulating muscles and redefining facial contour.
06The neighbourhood
The address sits in the 16th arrondissement's Trocadéro quarter, within walking distance of the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées, and close to the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Musée d'Art Moderne. The Bois de Boulogne and its Jardin d'Acclimatation lie a short walk beyond the gates, giving the hotel a country quiet rarely found this close to the centre of Paris.
07Making the most of a stay
Because Saint James Paris still functions as a private club as much as a hotel, its rhythms reward guests who slow down: breakfast and lunch at Bellefeuille are kept for residents and Club members, so the evening sitting is the moment to book, in smart casual dress, pets welcome everywhere except the dining room after dark. Concierges Clefs d'Or can arrange the details, from a ride on the hotel's own bicycles to a table for weekend Tea Time in the Library Bar.
