At Terra Dominicata, twenty-six rooms occupy a former monastic farm on the slopes of the Serra de Montsant, where the estate's own vines, olive groves and orchards still ring the property much as they did under Carthusian stewardship. The monks who settled here in the 12th century founded the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula at nearby Escaladei, and the viticulture they introduced still defines the Priorat denomination today. Run by the Vives family as both hotel and working winery, the estate bottles its own DOQ Priorat wine from 22 hectares of organic vineyard and keeps a cellar running past 300 Priorat and Montsant references for the Mater Terrae restaurant, set in the monks' former farmhouse with views over the vines from its terrace. The MICHELIN Guide awarded the hotel Three Keys in its 2025 selection, recognising an exceptional stay experience.

Terra Dominicata occupies the Carthusian monks' former farm, now a working DOQ Priorat winery and adults-only hotel inside the Montsant Natural Park.

01The house

The building is the old farm of the Carthusian monastery, standing where the monks grew their vines, olive trees and orchards for centuries before the Vives family rehabilitated it as a hotel without erasing that working-farm character. The estate still bottles its own wine from the same ground, a continuity rare among hotels built inside historic monastic land.

A tunnel built as an emergency escape route from the farm now runs underground between room 22 and the restaurant, used today to usher guests to dinner rather than away from danger. The hotel belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World, a membership that reflects the kind of independent, family-run property it has chosen to remain.

02Rooms and suites

The 26 rooms divide into four categories: ten Classic rooms of about 30 square metres without a bathtub, seven Superior rooms of roughly 35 square metres, seven Junior Suites of about 40 square metres with a separate tub, and two Deluxe Suites of around 45 square metres, also with a stand-alone bath. Rooms carry a queen bed or two twins, individual climate control, a minibar and a Nespresso machine, and in place of a television each room is given a tablet for digital content.

Insider tip

Isolated and best reached by car via Falset; the nearest train station has few direct services.

Every category adds L'Occitane bath products, sun hats for the vineyard walks, hair straighteners and free bottled water. Room 26, tucked around its own small courtyard, goes further still, with a roll-top bath at the foot of the bed and a working fireplace, reason enough on its own for a winter booking.

03Where to eat

Mater Terrae is the hotel's restaurant, set inside the monks' former farmhouse building, its summer terrace looking straight across the vines towards the Serra del Montsant. The kitchen works under chef Fran López, built on local produce and the estate's own history as a working farm, with lunch served from 1pm to 2.30pm and dinner from 8pm to 9.30pm.

The cellar runs past 300 Priorat and Montsant references, drawn both from the hotel's own 22-hectare vineyard and from neighbouring producers, giving guests the chance to taste vintages that rarely reach the open market.

04The bar

The bar keeps its own rhythm, pouring from noon until 11pm, while the restaurant kitchen stays open continuously from 7am to 10pm for guests who would rather eat on their own schedule than around formal service times. The full menu can also be sent to any room, at any hour the kitchen runs.

05Spa and wellbeing

Les Oliveres, the hotel's outdoor spa, sits inside the olive grove in an oak-built pavilion modelled on the estate's own wine barrels, reached along a path of white river stones chosen to recall the almonds that grow across Priorat. Guests book it privately, one couple at a time, for an hour taking in a Nordic hot bath, a Finnish dry sauna and a cold shower, finished with herbal tea and biscuits.

An outdoor pool surrounded by olive trees gives guests the same run of Montsant views the rooms enjoy, alongside electric-car charging and a concierge who arranges vineyard visits and hikes into the natural park.

06The neighbourhood

The hotel sits inside the Montsant Natural Park, 1.5 kilometres from the ruined Scala Dei Charterhouse the monks built and the village that still carries its name. Reus is the nearest airport, 28 kilometres away, and the hotel recommends driving in via Falset rather than the more winding direct roads, since the nearest train station, Marça-Falset, sees few services from Barcelona or Madrid.

07Making the most of a stay

Check-in runs from 4pm and check-out to noon, with breakfast served as a buffet with a hot dish menu between 8am and 10.30am. Guests can book a tour of the estate's own winery with a tasting of the Terra wines, including the Domus Aquilae, Umbra and Garnatxa Peluda, or take bottles home before the two-hour drive back to Barcelona.
