Baie Dorée – lunch at the water's edge on the Garoupe bay

On the shore of the Garoupe bay, the Hôtel Baie Dorée lays its lunch tables facing the sea. A small four-star house of eleven rooms with its own jetty, beach and landing stage – and one of the few tables on Cap d'Antibes you can reach by boat.

Some lunches are about the food. The best ones on the Riviera are about where the table is – and at the Hôtel Baie Dorée the table is almost in the water. The house stands at the heart of Cap d'Antibes, right on the shore of the Garoupe bay, the curve of sand and pines on the eastern side of the peninsula, and its restaurant does the simplest and most persuasive thing a seaside restaurant can do: in fine weather, the tables are laid out facing the sea. It is a small hotel, just eleven rooms, every one of them with a view of the water, and it keeps the scale of a house rather than a resort. Come by road if you must. Better still, come by boat: the hotel has its own landing stage and a small port, which makes a long lunch here the natural midpoint of a day on the water. It is the Cap at its most relaxed, and its most direct.

Here is the house, the hours, the way in from the sea and how to make a whole day of it on the Garoupe.

A small four-star hotel of eleven sea-view rooms whose restaurant lays its tables facing the sea – with its own jetty, beach and landing stage for boats.

01A house on the bay

Baie Dorée means golden bay, and the name is simply a description of the view. The hotel is four-star and deliberately modest in size: eleven rooms, a restaurant, a pool, a beach and a jetty, all turned towards the same stretch of water. What it offers is not spectacle but proximity. The sea is a few steps from your chair, the light comes straight off the bay, and the rhythm of the day is set by swimming, lunch and the boats coming and going.

That closeness to the water is rarer than it sounds. The Cap is ringed by rocks, walls and private gardens, and few tables sit this near the shoreline. Baie Dorée is one of them, and the restaurant is the reason to come even if you are not staying.

02Lunch, and the hours around it

Lunch runs from midday to 15.00, and that is the moment to come: a long, unhurried meal with the bay in front of you and nowhere else to be. Ask about the day's menu when you call to book. Breakfast is served from 7.00 to 10.00 – or in your room until 11.00 if you are staying – and an early breakfast on the terrace, before the bay fills with boats, is one of the quiet pleasures of the Garoupe.

Insider tip

Lunch 12.00–15.00; open mid-May to mid-October.

In high summer, and at weekends in particular, book ahead and ask for a table at the front. It is the whole point.

03Arriving by sea

This is one of the few addresses on Cap d'Antibes that you can reach directly by boat. The hotel has a landing stage and a small port where a tender can shelter, so you can anchor in the bay, come ashore for lunch and be back on the water in the afternoon. For anyone chartering a boat along the coast, it is the most elegant way to break a day between Antibes, Juan-les-Pins and the Îles de Lérins. By road, Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is about half an hour away.

04After lunch

There is no need to leave. The hotel's pool sits on what it calls the boat deck, a terrace overlooking the sea; the beach and the jetty are there for swimming straight from the shore; and an indoor pool with a Jacuzzi takes over when the weather turns. Massages can be arranged. It is the kind of afternoon that makes the case for staying the night.

05Staying the night

All eleven rooms look out to sea, which means every guest wakes up to the same view the restaurant is built around. The hotel is seasonal and opens from mid-May to mid-October – in 2026 from 15 May to 15 October. It also hosts parties, weddings and company seminars, indoors and out, and every one of them comes with the bay as the backdrop.

06Make a day of it on the Garoupe

The Garoupe side of the Cap rewards a slow day. Start on the sand at La Garoupe beach, then walk the coastal path that leaves from the end of the beach and follows the rocks towards the tip of the Cap and Villa Eilenroc. Climb, or drive, to the Garoupe plateau for the lighthouse, the sailors' chapel and the widest view on the peninsula. Come back down for lunch at Baie Dorée – and if you want to stay on the bay into the evening, La Plage du Cap and Villa Miraé, with Mauro Colagreco's Amarines, are a few minutes' walk along the shore road.
