On a quiet street named after the composer who gave it its name, in the district Nice calls the Quartier des Musiciens, Gounod Nice occupies a gold-ochre Belle Époque townhouse crowned with a slate dome and a pewter spire. The hotel has belonged to the same family, the Tschanns, since 1971, and reopened in 2024 after a full renovation that turned a classic three-star address into a confident, Art Deco-inflected four-star house of 35 rooms and suites. Moulded façades, rounded salons, olive-wood desks and velvet upholstery replace anything generic with a sense of period and place. Guests share the spa, pool and rooftop bar of the neighbouring Splendid Hotel & Spa, the family's flagship next door, while breakfasting on organic, local produce downstairs. The MICHELIN Guide lists Gounod Nice among its selected addresses in the city, a quiet nod to a house that trades on restraint rather than spectacle.

Gounod Nice occupies a 1905 gold-façaded house in the quiet Quartier des Musiciens, steps from Nice-Ville station and the old town.
01The house
The building itself predates its hotel life by decades: local heritage records date the structure to around 1900, and press accounts of the 2024 relaunch give 1905 as the year it was built in the then-fashionable Musicians' Quarter. The family story behind it starts earlier still. In 1884 the Tschanns began building a hotel dynasty on the Côte d'Azur; in 1910 Eugène Tschann left Alsace to take over the Hôtel Splendid with his wife Adrienne, and it was there, in 1911, that their son Henri was born, the man who would later expand the family's holdings. On his father's death in 1939 Henri took charge of the Splendid, and in 1971 he bought the Gounod, bringing it into the family fold it has never left.
The current look is the work of a 2024 top-to-toe renovation, with Stéphan Olivier as executing architect and Frédéric Pujalté handling engineering. The relaunch was celebrated on 8 October 2024, marking what the hotel's owners call the start of a new era for a house caught between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The project received a grant from the Région Sud, support the hotel credits on its own site. Michel Tschann, who took over from his father Henri in 1989, had already added a spa, a restaurant and a rooftop to the group's properties before his son, also named Henri, took the reins of the family company in 2010.

02Rooms and suites
The 35 rooms and suites favour soothing, tailored colour rather than pattern: gold, chocolate and olive green, with velvet, satin and cotton used throughout, and olive-wood desks fitted into the more compact rooms. The entry-level Standard Double or Twin covers 18 m² with a king bed or two 90 cm singles and a shower or bath; the Deluxe Room steps up to 22 m², adding a sofa, an armchair and a bathtub set in an alcove behind a tall French window, lit by natural light that falls across the room. The 20 m² Junior Suite separates sleeping and sitting areas, while the Suite Prestige and Suite Privilège, each around 30 m², divide bedroom from salon behind a glass partition in the manner of the hotel's largest accommodation.
Insider tipShares spa, pool and rooftop bar with the Splendid Hotel & Spa next door; 15 minutes on foot from the Promenade des Anglais.
That largest room, the 57 m² Suite Signature, is reached through four French windows that flood the courtyard-facing salon and bedroom with light and guarantee near-total quiet; an original wood-framed glazed partition divides the rounded living room from the sleeping area, and the bathroom alone runs to more than 10.5 m², with twin rain showers, a bath and a double basin. Above it all sits the Suite Origine, the room its owners say inspired the whole renovation: a rounded salon under a finely worked ceiling, a period dressing table, and an 11 m² terrace under the roof, decorated with the kind of hushed glamour more than one visitor has compared to a Bond film set. Independent accounts of the refurbished rooms describe deep bronze and gold tones, sculpture, old books and ceramics, with olive-green mosaic tiling in the bathrooms.
03The bar
Gounod Nice has no freestanding bar of its own, but guests have the run of the rooftop bar at the Splendid Hotel & Spa next door, where the house suggests ending the day admiring the view over the rooftops of central Nice. It is the kind of arrangement that comes from two hotels, and one family, sharing a street.

04Spa and pool
Wellness facilities are likewise pooled with the Splendid: guests at the Gounod can use its spa, sauna, swimming pool and gym during their stay, an arrangement that lets a 35-room townhouse offer the full range of four-star amenities without building them twice over. The rooftop pool and gym at the Splendid are a short walk from the Gounod's own front door on rue Gounod.
05The neighbourhood
The hotel sits inside the Quartier des Musiciens, where most streets are named after classical composers, Charles Gounod among them, and where Belle-Époque architecture mixes with later Art Nouveau and Art Deco detailing of the kind echoed inside the hotel. It is a quiet, largely residential pocket of central Nice, a short walk from the train station and around fifteen minutes on foot from the Promenade des Anglais, with the old town and the port within easy reach. Since 27 July 2021, the wider historic centre of Nice, including the seafront and the old port, has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as a testament to the city's development as a winter resort for 18th- and 19th-century aristocratic visitors.
06Making the most of a stay
Breakfast is a buffet built around organic and local produce, served downstairs before the day's walk into the old town or along the seafront. Business travellers have access to an equipped meeting room for seminars and conferences, useful given the hotel's proximity to the Palais des Expositions and the station. The hotel also takes part in the Nice Côte d'Azur tourist office's "Nice Hôtel Historique" label, a scheme built around the city's UNESCO-listed status as a winter resort that invites guests to experience something of the pre-1939 villégiature hivernale first-hand.
