From the coastal road between Nice and Monaco, you can see Le Cap Estel far below: a light-coloured house on a headland jutting out into the Mediterranean, with a pool right at the water's edge. The headland is private and covers two hectares. The house is a neoclassical manor from the 1800s, and it has since grown with both classical and modern sections.

Le Cap Estel is located in Èze-bord-de-mer, the part of Èze that lies by the sea, a few minutes from Monaco. The hotel has five stars according to Atout France's classification and 20 rooms.

01The house on the headland

According to the Guide Michelin hotel guide, the rooms are spread across four locations, including the main building and a garden annexe. The Le Parc and La Mer suites are built into the sea wall on either side of the manor house, so that the terraces are close to the water.

The suites vary greatly in size. Explore Nice Côte d'Azur states that they range from 50 to 500 square metres, and the hotel also has its own cinema and its own helicopter pad.

02Pool with a 270-degree view

The location is Le Cap Estel's greatest asset. According to Michelin, the infinity pool at the very tip of the headland has a 270-degree view of the Mediterranean, and below lies the hotel's own beach. A pool bar means you can stay by the water all day.

On a coast where most hotels sit on a road or a promenade, a private headland is unusual. Here, it is the sea you hear rather than the traffic.

03La Table du Cap Estel and Le Ficus

The hotel's gastronomic restaurant, La Table du Cap Estel, is located in the manor house and holds a star in the Guide Michelin. Michelin describes the cuisine as modern and creative, and the kitchen has been associated with the chef Patrick Raingeard. For simpler meals there is Le Ficus, the restaurant in the garden, with a bar.

04Èze-bord-de-mer and Nietzsche's path

From Èze-bord-de-mer, a steep path leads up to the hilltop village of Èze, where Château de la Chèvre d'Or and its two-starred restaurant are located. The path is named after the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who walked it during his stays on the Riviera. The walk takes an hour or more, so choose a cool morning.

Monaco lies to the east and Villefranche and Cap-Ferrat to the west. The Principality can be found district by district in VERA PI's Monaco guide, the coast in the guide to the French Riviera, and we gather more hotels at metromode.co.

05How to make the most of your stay at Le Cap Estel

With 20 rooms, Le Cap Estel is a small hotel, so book well in advance for the summer and the Grand Prix week in Monaco. Ask for a suite with a terrace facing the sea, and book a table at La Table du Cap Estel at the same time as the room. Check seasonal dates directly with the hotel.
