Les Sources de Caudalie – a Palace grown from vine cuttings

In the vines of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte near Bordeaux, a family's wine estate became a Three-MICHELIN-Key retreat with a two-star table and the spa that invented vinothérapy.

Twenty minutes south of Bordeaux, among the rows of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte, Les Sources de Caudalie grew out of a family's decision to share a vineyard rather than simply farm it. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Three Keys, its highest distinction, and inside the estate the restaurant La Grand'Vigne carries Two MICHELIN Stars under chef Nicolas Masse. What makes the address singular in the Bordeaux region is not scale but origin: this is a hotel built by winegrowers, on working vineyard land, where the spa treatments are made from the estate's own grape-seed polyphenols and the dining rooms are built from salvaged cellar timber. Six houses, a scattering of contemporary sculpture and a Grand Cru Classé of Graves surround guests rather than a city street. It remains, in essence, a vigneron's idea of hospitality, pursued without compromise for more than two decades.

MICHELIN Guide
Three MICHELIN Keys

Six houses scattered through the vines of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte, with a two-MICHELIN-star table and the spa that invented vinothérapy.

01The house

The story begins in wine, not hospitality. The 800-year-old Smith Haut-Lafitte property was purchased in 1990 by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, former Olympic skiers and owners of a successful sporting goods company. They restored the vineyard first; the hotel came later, opened in 1999 and run by their daughter Alice Cathiard-Tourbier and her husband, Jérôme Tourbier. It was on this same estate, in the same year, that vinothérapy itself was invented, when another daughter, Mathilde, and her husband Bertrand Thomas created the first Caudalie spa built around the antioxidant properties of grape-seed extract.

Florence Cathiard has since built a collection of contemporary art across the grounds, most famously Barry Flanagan's bronze hare, which has become something of an emblem for the whole property. The estate's commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, pursued since the early 1990s and certified in 2019, drew King Charles III to Smith Haut-Lafitte on an official visit in September 2023, a nod to shared ground between the Cathiards' vineyard practices and his own at Highgrove.

02Rooms and suites

The hotel's 62 rooms and suites are scattered across six houses built as regional variations on Aquitaine architecture: La Bastide des Grands Crus, Le Comptoir des Indes, La Maison du Lièvre, La Grange au Bateau, Le Village des Pêcheurs and L'Île aux Oiseaux. Each room carries its own name, from Claret to Archipels, with decor to match rather than a repeated hotel template.

Insider tip

20 minutes from central Bordeaux; spa access requires a treatment booking, age 16+.

For longer stays or families, the Apartment Au Cœur des Sources sits apart from the main circuit, overlooking the lake and vineyards with its own access from the gardens; it is let as a whole and comfortably holds up to six guests.

03Where to eat

La Grand'Vigne, the two-star dining room, takes its architectural cue from eighteenth-century ornamental greenhouses, and Nicolas Masse's cooking leans on produce grown in the estate's own organic vegetable gardens alongside the finest local farm supply. The room itself is dressed in deep, carbon-toned materials, a quiet backdrop for a kitchen that sources its ingredients exclusively from Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Pastry comes from Anthony Chenoz, trained in the region, whose desserts run from breakfast pastries to the more elaborate compositions served at dinner.

La Table du Lavoir is the estate's countryside table, built around an actual lavoir, a washhouse rebuilt stone by stone in tribute to the winemakers' wives who once did their laundry on the spot. Its timber frame was constructed from eighteenth-century wood salvaged from the cellars of Château Lafite Rothschild, and in summer its glass doors open onto a terrace facing the château itself.

ROUGE completes the trio as a wine bar and gourmet grocery devoted to South-West produce and the best of the Bordeaux crus, a more informal counterpoint to the two dining rooms.

04The bar

French Paradox is designed as a room apart: wood and rope on the armchairs, velvet on the benches, and a wall of oak bookshelves lined with an eclectic run of objects. The bar's own cellar holds a run of old Armagnacs, Cognacs and whiskies alongside a serious list of Pessac-Léognan reds and whites, a fitting home for the estate's own wines served by the glass.

05Spa and wellbeing

The Caudalie Vinothérapie spa remains the reason many guests first book. Its treatments are built on the antioxidant power of grape-seed polyphenols, credited with an efficacy many times that of vitamin E, and its signature rituals include barrel baths drawn in former wine casks and the Crushed Cabernet body scrub made from grape marc.

Facilities run to an outdoor heated pool open from April to October, an indoor pool, hammam, thermal bath and jacuzzi. The spa itself opens Monday from 10am to 7pm, Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 7pm and Sunday from 9am to 1pm, with access to the wet facilities reserved for guests booking a treatment, from age sixteen.

06The neighbourhood

Martillac sits a short twenty minutes from central Bordeaux, close enough for a morning in the city and an evening back among the vines of this Grand Cru Classé de Graves estate. The Pessac-Léognan appellation around the hotel is itself part of the draw, with Château Smith Haut-Lafitte's own wines poured throughout the property, from the breakfast table to the French Paradox cellar.

07Making the most of a stay

A heliport on site allows for express transfers despite the estate's distance from the airport, a detail that suits a clientele arriving for a single dinner as often as a week-long cure. Beyond the spa and the two dining rooms, the hotel runs mixology sessions behind the French Paradox bar and cooking classes with Nicolas Masse's own kitchen team, giving a closer look at the produce and technique behind La Grand'Vigne's two stars.
