On the quiet northern reach of Yountville's Washington Street, a few steps from where Thomas Keller's French Laundry draws its daily queue, North Block occupies a 20-room property wrapped around a lantern-lit, European-style courtyard. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Two Keys, a distinction earned not through scale but through the precision of its details: a tiled fountain, a fireplace dressed in ceramic magnolias, rooms dressed by one of Wine Country's most sought-after decorators. The hotel began life as Hotel Luca before a 2012 redesign and rebrand, and its ground-floor restaurant has changed names and chefs more than once since – most recently settling, in 2026, into a deliberately unstarched version of itself under Napa-born chef Antonio Natal. What has not changed is the sense of being tucked just off Yountville's culinary spine, with a heated pool, an intimate spa and a stable of cruiser bikes standing ready for the short ride into town.

01The house
North Block occupies a building constructed in 2009 on Yountville's Washington Street, and what guests see today is largely the result of a 2012 transformation. A refreshed lobby and new restaurant are headlining features in a re-branding project that has turned Yountville's former Hotel Luca into the new North Block Hotel. St Helena-based decorator Erin Martin oversaw the overhaul, giving the entrance a suspended reception desk set against charcoal walls and cushioned seating gathered around a large fireplace.
Outside, the transformation is just as deliberate. Guests are greeted by a lush courtyard with ample seating and an artful fireplace adorned with ceramic magnolias by Owen Mann, while the colourful hand-painted tiles on the steps and a quaint central fountain complete the picture. The 20 rooms themselves were also conceived by Martin, a return engagement for a designer whose industrial-meets-residential style has shaped much of wine country's recent hospitality. The property is part of the Mosaic Hotel Collection, the Mill Valley-based group whose portfolio also includes The Madrona in Healdsburg and El Dorado in Sonoma.

02Rooms and suites
The 20 guest rooms are arranged around the social courtyard, ground-floor rooms opening onto private patios and upper-floor rooms onto balconies that look toward the rolling hills beyond town. The lineup runs from Deluxe Queen and Deluxe Double Queen through Deluxe King and Premium King to a Superior King with Fireplace, each described on the hotel's own site as sophisticated, well-appointed and comfortably chic.

Bathrooms carry the same attention: marble vanities with double sinks, a soaking tub and a separate rain shower, with heated floors. Beds are made up in 300-thread-count linens, pillow-top mattresses and feather duvets – the kind of unglamorous comfort that, as the hotel puts it, is the detail guests remember longest.
03Where to eat
The ground-floor restaurant has had more than one life. It opened in 2012 as Redd Wood, a casual pizza-and-pasta room from chef Richard Reddington, known for his Michelin-starred Redd nearby. In 2021 the space was reinvented again as The Restaurant at North Block, a more ambitious, tasting-menu-driven kitchen that over the following years passed through a succession of chefs, including a stint under Juan Cabrera built around live-fire, valley-to-coast cooking.
By autumn 2026 the restaurant had both a new name – simply North Block Restaurant – and a new direction. North Block Restaurant is ditching the white tablecloths and multi-course tasting menus for a more approachable take on Napa Valley dining, encouraging diners to slow down and choose their own adventure. At the stove is Executive Chef Antonio Natal, a Napa Valley native who trained in Baking and Pastry Arts at the Culinary Institute of America in St Helena and has since worked kitchens including The Slanted Door, Press Steakhouse and Mustards Grill. His seasonal, à la carte menu runs to handmade pastas, sourdough pizzas, fresh seafood and live-fire cooking shaped by Latin-Italian influences. The restaurant continues to carry a MICHELIN Guide recommendation, placing it among Yountville's dense cluster of listed tables without, so far, a star.
04The bar
Behind the cocktail list is Coy Estes, a longtime Napa bartender whose menu leans on house infusions and barrel-aged spirits rather than straight wine pours – drinks such as the Metropolitano, built on Meyer lemon vodka, limoncello and a passion fruit-black pepper syrup. A daily Happiest Hour runs from 3 to 6pm in the dog-friendly courtyard, the same space that by evening turns into the restaurant's overflow dining room, warmed by the fireplace and its ceramic magnolias.
05Spa and pool
The Spa at North Block is a small, boutique operation housed in the main building, open daily for treatments from 9am to 8pm. Signature services include Un-Corked, a sixty-minute foot and back exfoliation followed by massage; a three-hour Have It All combining scrub, hair and scalp treatment, massage and a mini facial; and the North Block Signature Scrub, a ninety-minute exfoliation with walnut shell powder, sweet almond and blood orange finished with a pink grapefruit massage.
Outside, a year-round heated pool and hot tub sit within the courtyard, lined with cabanas for guests working through a day of tastings. Complimentary cruiser bikes are available on a first-come basis for rides into town or along the nearby Vine Trail.
06The neighbourhood
North Block sits at what might be the most concentrated stretch of fine dining in North America. The French Laundry is roughly a quarter of a mile away, Bistro Jeanty about half a mile in the other direction, and the hotel's own position at the quieter north end of Washington Street keeps it a short, walkable distance from both without sitting in the thick of the daytime tasting-room crowds. Small-production wine rooms, galleries and boutique shops fill the blocks in between, all of it flat enough to cover on one of the hotel's bikes.
07Making the most of a stay
As of October 2026 the hotel publishes a daily resort fee of $55, which covers a welcome pour and evening nightcap of curated local wines, complimentary parking, continental breakfast and full use of the pool and whirlpool. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out by 11am. Dinner service runs nightly from 5 to 9pm, extending to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with weekend brunch from 11.30am and a Sunday Supper series offering a changing three-course menu. Reserve the restaurant in advance during the Yountville dinner rush, and ask at check-in about the cruiser bikes, which go quickly on weekend mornings.
