Founded in 1755 by a court servant and the daughter of the royal chef, Copenhagen's grand hotel was reborn in 2013 – with 92 rooms and suites, Marchal and the only indoor pool in the city centre.
In this story · 7 sections
In 1755 a court servant and the daughter of the royal chef opened a restaurant on Kongens Nytorv, the great square at the end of Nyhavn. From it grew Hotel d'Angleterre, Copenhagen's grand hotel, whose white façade still faces Charlottenborg and the Royal Danish Theatre across the square. Hans Christian Andersen stayed here, as did Winston Churchill; Alfred Hitchcock put the hotel into his 1966 film Torn Curtain.
Today it is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, with 92 rooms and suites, and it was reborn in May 2013 after an extensive restoration.

01From 1755 to the fire of 1795
The hotel traces its history to that first restaurant of 1755. Forty years later, in 1795, fire destroyed the original building beyond repair, and the hotel has occupied its present building on the square since then.
02Dahlerup and Møller's extension
Between 1872 and 1875 the architects Vilhelm Dahlerup and Georg E. W. Møller extended and refurbished the building on a large scale, shaping the façade that faces the square today.
03The rebirth of 2013
The hotel reopened in May 2013 after a long restoration. The rooms became larger than before; each is decorated individually, and some have balconies or fireplaces. There are now 37 rooms and 55 suites. In 2015 Condé Nast Traveler placed the hotel on its Gold List of the world's best hotels.
04Marchal
Marchal, the hotel's restaurant, combines Nordic produce with classic French cooking. It has been recognised with a Michelin star, and its executive chef is Alexander Baert. The hotel also has a cocktail and champagne bar.
The kitchen has its own place in Danish film history: in 1978 it stood in for the fictional restaurant Maxim in The Olsen Gang Sees Red.
05The spa and the pool
The spa is run under the Amazing Space name and has an indoor pool, a fitness area and a lounge. According to the hotel, it is the only indoor pool in central Copenhagen.
06Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn
Nyhavn opens off the square, the royal palace of Amalienborg is a short walk away, and Strøget, the long pedestrian shopping street, begins at the corner. More of the world's great hotels are collected on metromode.co and in our list of the world's 100 best hotels, and Metro Mode's food coverage is gathered under food and drink.
07Making the most of a stay
Ask for a room facing Kongens Nytorv, or a suite with a balcony. Book Marchal for dinner, and use the pool on a grey northern morning. In the evening, the Royal Danish Theatre is across the square.
