Christmas markets began in the German-speaking lands in the late Middle Ages – Vienna had a "December market" as early as 1298 – and they remain an Advent ritual in Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol. In the Alps they gain something extra: mountains behind the stalls, the chance of snow, and old towns that look as if they were built for the purpose. This guide is strictly Alpine. For the great city markets of the rest of the continent, see our guide to Europe's best Christmas markets.

Salzburg: Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz
Salzburg's Christkindlmarkt fills the cathedral square and the Residenzplatz in the heart of the Unesco-listed old town, with around 100 stalls. Its origins go back to the late fifteenth century, when a "Tandlmarkt" was held on Cathedral Square; by the seventeenth century it was called the Nikolaimarkt, and the present market has run since 1974, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 2024. The 2026 season runs from 19 November to 1 January 2027. Alpine tradition is part of the programme: a Krampus run on 5 December, St Nicholas on 6 December and a Perchten run on 21 December, plus a public sing-along every Tuesday evening.
Innsbruck: four markets beneath the Nordkette
Innsbruck spreads Christmas across the city. The Old Town market stands in front of the Golden Roof, selling ornaments, handicrafts and Tyrolean food such as Kiachln, from 13 November to 23 December 2026. Maria-Theresien-Straße, the main shopping street, has a more contemporary market from 25 November to 6 January 2027, and the Marktplatz a family market with a carousel and petting zoo. The most memorable is the Panorama Christmas Market on the Hungerburg, reached by funicular, with views over the city and the valley, open from 20 November to 6 January.
Bolzano: Piazza Walther
South Tyrol's capital has around 70 wooden chalets on Piazza Walther, its main square, where the meeting of Italian and Alpine traditions is the attraction: local wines, gingerbread biscuits, homemade desserts and mulled wine. Entry is free. The 2026 market runs from 27 November to 6 January 2027. Bolzano makes a good base for a South Tyrol market tour, with Merano, Bressanone and Vipiteno all within reach by train.
Merano: along the Passer
Merano, the old spa town, sets its Meraner Weihnacht along the Kurpromenade beside the river Passer as far as the Thermenplatz, with further areas on the Sandplatz, Winterpromenade, Pfarrplatz and Kornplatz. It opens at 17:00 on 26 November 2026 and runs to 6 January 2027. Nearby, Bressanone fills its cathedral square from 27 November, and Vipiteno sets its Glockenweihnacht beneath the Zwölferturm.
Montreux: Noël on Lake Geneva
Montreux Noël, held since 1995, lines the quays between the CGN boat landing and the Place du Marché, about 200 metres from the station, with more than 150 chalets. The 2026 edition runs from 20 November to 24 December. Two side trips make it special. Father Christmas has his house at 2,042 metres on the Rochers-de-Naye, about 55 minutes by cog railway – places are limited, and the organisers advise against it for children under three because of the altitude. And the Château de Chillon stages a medieval Christmas on weekends from 28 November to 13 December, with castle admission.
Planning an Alpine market trip
Go on weekdays if you can, and in the late afternoon, when the lights come on. Dress for cold rather than for the photographs: warm boots and gloves make the difference. Combine two or three markets by train – Innsbruck and Bolzano are linked across the Brenner, and the South Tyrol towns are close together. And book hotels early for December weekends.
