In 2018, Frantzén became the first restaurant in Sweden to be awarded three stars in the Guide Michelin. The evening begins in a lounge under the roof on Klara Norra Kyrkogata and continues at the kitchen counter – and the stars remain in 2026.

An evening at Frantzén begins in a lift. The coat is left in the entrance on Klara Norra Kyrkogata 26, and then the guest is taken up to a lounge under the roof, with sofas by an open fireplace and a terrace above the rooftops of Stockholm. There, the evening's ingredients are displayed before dinner moves down to the dining room and the kitchen counter. This is how food writer Anders Husa described the restaurant when it opened in new premises in the autumn of 2017.

Six months later, in February 2018, Frantzén became the first restaurant in Sweden to receive three stars in the Guide Michelin. It has kept them every year since, also in the 2026 Nordic guide.

01From Frantzén/Lindeberg to Frantzén

The restaurant opened in 2008 in Gamla stan under the name Frantzén/Lindeberg. Behind it were chef Björn Frantzén and pastry chef Daniel Lindeberg, who had both worked at Edsbacka krog. The first star came in 2009 and the second as early as the 2010 guide.

In 2013, Lindeberg left, and the restaurant became known as Frantzén. According to Wikipedia, he said that he was not prepared to sacrifice everything for a third star. The story of the two chefs is told in SVT's 2015 documentary Hunger.

02Björn Frantzén – from AIK to nine stars

Björn Frantzén was born on 26 January 1977 in Solna and played football for AIK between 1992 and 1996 before pursuing a career in the kitchen. He attended catering school in Stockholm, cooked in the military in Boden, and then worked at Edsbacka krog and in London at Chez Nico, Dining Lettonie and Pied à Terre, as well as under Alain Passard at L'Arpège in Paris.

Today he runs restaurants across several continents. Zén in Singapore has held three stars since 2021, and in May 2025 FZN in Dubai was awarded three stars. According to Falstaff, Frantzén is therefore the only chef in the world with three three-starred restaurants simultaneously – nine stars in total.

03A three-storey 19th-century house

In May 2016, Frantzén closed in Gamla stan to move to a larger building. The new restaurant at Klara Norra Kyrkogata 26 is located in a fully renovated building from the 1800s and occupies three entire floors and a terrace. The area is around 500 square metres compared to 90 in Gamla stan. The property owner Antonia Ax:son Johnson became a co-owner.

The interior was designed together with Joyn Studio. Despite the larger premises, the number of seats remains the same as before, 23, and more than half of them are at the counter around the open kitchen. The new kitchen also makes it possible to cook over an open flame.

04A Nordic kitchen at the counter

Michelin classes the cuisine as Nordic. When Anders Husa dined here in 2017, dishes served included raw potato cake with Kalix bleak roe, Swedish blue mussel with chawanmushi, oven-baked wild turbot with caviar, veal sweetbread glazed with liquorice, and Swedish French toast with truffle and aged cheese. The dinner concluded with The Cube, a selection of 27 small chocolates and flavours.

According to Wikipedia, the kitchen is now led by Charlie Benitez, and the dress code is listed as business smart.

05Norrmalm around the corner

Klara Norra Kyrkogata is located in Norrmalm, a few blocks from Stockholm Central Station and Klara Church. For more tables in the city, read our guide to Stockholm's Michelin restaurants. More tables and hotels in Stockholm are collected on metromode.co.

06How to get a table at Frantzén

With 23 seats, Frantzén is a small restaurant. According to Wikipedia, bookings open two months in advance, so plan early. Ask for a seat at the kitchen counter if you want to see the work up close, and set aside the whole evening.
